Who Is Phoebe Waller-Bridge & How Can You Watch Her Emmy-Nominated Series ‘Fleabag’?

The recent announcement of the 2019 Emmy nominees brought with it many well-known stars, as well as few lesser-known celebrities. If you’re wondering who Phoebe Waller-Bridge, star of Fleabag is, read on. And if you want to watch the series, we’ll tell you where you can do so.

Here’s how you know Phoebe Waller-Bridge

You may not recognize Waller-Bridge’s face, but you probably are familiar with her voice. Her most notable role to date was as the equality-seeking droid L3-37 in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Given her character’s death in the film, this was likely a one-off role.

Additionally, Waller-Bridge is known for her writing. She is one of the co-creators and executive producers of the British spy thriller series Killing Eve and was the head writer in Season 1. Waller-Bridge was nominated for her first Emmy in 2018 for her writing on the show’s first episode, “Nice Face.”

This is what Fleabag is about

Waller-Bridge combines her acting ability and writing skill with her comedy-drama series Fleabag, an Amazon Studios/BBC Three production. You can check it out yourself for free with an Amazon Prime membership, but here’s a brief synopsis in case you’re curious.

Waller-Bridge’s unnamed character is a young woman running a cafe in London by herself after the untimely death of her best friend and business partner, Boo. She deals with the struggles of managing the cafe, dealing with her family and love life, all while reconciling her guilt over Boo’s passing. It’s a darkly funny and entertaining look at relationships of all kinds.

Both Waller-Bridge and the series are nominated for Emmys

Season 1 of Fleabag first began airing in July 2016, and is comprised of just six 30-minute episodes. Given Waller-Bridge’s busy schedule with Solo: A Star Wars Story and Killing Eve, it took until March 2019 for the second season, also six episodes long, to premiere.

However, it was clearly worth it. Fleabag is nominated for numerous Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Plus, Waller-Bridge is nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and Olivia Colman and Sian Clifford are will compete in the Supporting Actress category.

Sadly, Waller-Bridge has confirmed that Season 2 is the end of Fleabag as we know it. But that doesn’t mean we’ll never see the character again.

The series originally came from Waller-Bridge’s one-woman show of the same name, which recently completed its Off-Broadway run. She will continue to perform in shows in London in August and September.

And on Sept. 12, 2019, there will be a live broadcast shown in theaters. We can assume this will then lead to a release of the broadcast in movie form, hopefully available on Amazon Prime as well.

This is what’s next for Waller-Bridge

Though Fleabag is over, Waller-Bridge isn’t slowing down. She will receive a writing credit on the upcoming installment of the infamous spy franchise, titled Bond 25. And her show-creator says are far from behind her:

Along with her DryWrite partner, Vicky Jones, she is executive producing a new series for HBO, Run. Variety reports that Waller-Bridge will have a recurring role in the show, which stars fellow Star Wars alum Domhnall Gleeson and Emmy-winner Merritt Wever.
