Piers Morgan Calls for Meghan Markle to Be Stripped of Royal Title After Her ‘Brazenly Bipartisan’ Remarks

Longtime media personality Piers Morgan has called for Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and her husband, Prince Harry, to be stripped of their royal titles. After Meghan made comments about the 2020 presidential election during an appearance on the virtual When All Women Vote event on Aug. 20, Morgan took to Twitter to condemn her actions.

Since stepping down from her role as a senior working member of the royal family alongside her husband in early 2020, Meghan has been more vocal about political and social issues, speaking out on topics such as voter registration and racism. Traditionally, members of the royal family have opted to stay away from political affairs, as they are required to remain nonpartisan due to British customs.

Meghan was one of several guests featured on Michelle Obama’s digital voter registration event that took place Aug. 20. The virtual “Couch Party” commemorated the centennial of the 19th amendment, and was geared towards getting more people to vote in the upcoming 2020 presidential election.

During the digital event, Meghan encouraged people to ensure that they were registered to vote, although she did not endorse a particular candidate. According to Yahoo, Meghan stated, “We vote to honour those who came before us and to protect those that come after us. That’s what community is all about and that’s specifically what this election is all about.” She continued, “You’re just as mobilised and energised to see the change we all need and deserve. This fight is worth fighting and we all need to be out there mobilising to have our voices heard.”

Meghan was adamant about viewers exercising their right to vote, and told the digital audience “If you aren’t part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. If you are complacent, you are complicit.”  Although voting is not technically illegal for UK royalty, it would be considered unconstitutional if Meghan did.

Piers Morgan called Meghan Markle out on Twitter shortly after

Not long after Meghan’s comments, Morgan took to Twitter to demand that she be removed from her position in the royal family. Morgan called for Meghan and Prince Harry to be stripped of their titles as Sussexes, due to Meghan’s “brazenly partisan” remarks. Morgan tweeted: “They can’t remain as royals and spout off about foreign elections in such a brazenly partisan way.” He later said, “She can do what she likes, she just can’t make politically partisan statements while remaining Duchess of Sussex..

Morgan has been critical of Meghan in the past, criticizing her “track record” and even comparing her to Kim Kardashian West. In a Fox special on Jan. 2020, Morgan said “If Meghan Markle thinks she’s going to emerge from this as some kind of Princess Diana figure, she needs to think again.” He added: “She’s going to end up like a mini royal Kim Kardashian, with all the ignominy that goes with that title.”

Meghan and Prince Harry remain members of the royal family, although they currently live in Santa Barbara after having moved to Southern California in early 2020.
