‘Poldark’ Star Eleanor Tomlinson Joins James Norton in Joss Whedon’s New HBO Series ‘The Nevers’
Poldark is coming to an end, but fans will soon get a chance to see star Eleanor Tomlinson in another period-set show. The actress, who plays Demelza on the BBC/PBS drama, has joined the cast of The Nevers. It will be the first TV series from Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon since Agents of SHIELD.
What we know about ‘The Nevers’
The Nevers is an upcoming sci-fi drama from HBO. The show will focus on “a gang of Victorian women, known as ‘The Touched,’ who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that could change the world,” according to the network.
Whedon, who also directed The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, will serve as executive producer, showrunner, writer, and director on the show. Jane Epenson and Doug Petrie, who were writers for Buffy, will also write for The Nevers.
HBO has not announced an air date for the series.
James Norton and Laura Donnelly have also joined the cast
So far, the cast of The Nevers reads like a who’s who of stars of some of your favorite period dramas. In addition to Tomlinson, Grantchester and Happy Valley alum James Norton is on board. He’ll play “pansexual posh boy Hugo Swann” who runs a secret club and is fascinated by The Touched.
Laura Donnelly, who Outlander fans will recognize from her role as Jamie’s sister Jenny on the Starz drama, will play series lead Amelia True, a reckless, impulsive, and emotionally damaged hero.
Tomlinson will play a character named Mary Brighton. She’s a gentle yet resilient woman who’s pursued her dreams of becoming a singer despite many disappointments. Her Poldark co-star Pip Torrens will play Lord Massen, a ex-General who is determined to protect people from The Touched.
Nick Frost (Into the Badlands) will play Declan Orrun, a low-level crime lord who’s happy to help Amelia and her gang — but just as happy to sell them out. Denis O’Hare (True Blood, Big Little Lies) will play an American surgeon named Dr. Edmund Hague, and Olivia Williams (Rushmore, Miss Austen Regrets) plays Lavinia Bidlow, a wealthy spinster and supporter of The Touched.
Other announced cast members include Ann Skelly, Zackary Momoh, Tom Riley, Amy Mason, Rochelle Neil, and Ben Chaplin.
Whedon says he loves the Victorian era
A show set during the reign of Queen Victoria is a shift from the modern-day superheroes of The Avengers or the teenage vampire slayer of Buffy. But Whedon says he’s long been fascinated by the time period.
“I just love that era, I love that stuff, it’s fascinating to me,” he said in an interview with IGN in 2018. “Particularly, the end of the century, when the world was just about to shift radically.”
“I realized at some point that I didn’t wanna tell a story about a person, that I wanted to tell a story that was… this is gonna sound like I’m puffing me up, but Dickensian,” he added. “That was like, where I can talk about society as a whole through a bunch of people’s interactions and through their adventures.”
