‘The Politician’: The First Trailer For Ryan Murphy’s New Netflix Series Is Here

Writer and creator Ryan Murphy has a brand new project headed to Netflix, and fans of his work are going to love it. Here’s a first look at the new trailer for The Politician, as well as everything you need to know about the series.

What is The Politician about?

Murphy’s latest series is about a high school race for student council president. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, as with everything Murphy does, it’s bound to feature death, camp, romance, and much more.

According to the synopsis, this isn’t exactly an anthology series like most of what we’ve seen from Murphy over the past several years. Rather, each season will continue to follow the same character, only it will showcase different political elections he is in. Season 1 of The Politician premieres Sept. 27, 2019.

Murphy’s deal with Netflix

Ever since Nip/Tuck and Glee, Murphy has been all about Fox and its owned networks. Aside from the short-lived sitcom The New Normal, which aired on NBC, everything Murphy has been a part of has aired on the main network or FX. But that’s all about to change.

In 2018, Murphy inked a $300 million deal with Netflix. His current series like American Horror Story and American Crime Story will stay with FX, but moving forward, everything else he executive produces will be on the streaming service. That includes The Politician and the upcoming Sarah Paulson vehicle Ratched

The Politician’s first trailer is here

If you can watch the trailer above and not want to immediately binge this series, it may not be for you. But if you’re like the rest of us, you’re hooked right off the back on the political career of high school student Payton Hobart, who recruits a sickly girl, Infinity Jackson, to be his running mate.

Payton isn’t your ordinary teenager. He has big political dreams, and he’ll do anything to achieve them. However, his competition is determined to take him out. It’s a look at the cutthroat world of politics, but on a smaller scale. Think Reese Witherspoon in Election 20 years later, but with even more camp (as is expected with anything Murphy does).

Here’s how you know the stars of the series

Payton is portrayed by Ben Platt. This is Platt’s first big TV role, having first become famous for his starring role in the musical Dear Evan Hansen, which earned him a Tony. You may also recognize him as Benji, the magician friend of Jesse’s from the Pitch Perfect franchise.

Infinity is played by Zoey Deutch. Like her co-star, this is Deutch’s first regular TV role, having appeared in recurring roles on series such The Suite Life on Deck and Ringer. Deutch is an up-and-coming actress, appearing in The Disaster Artist and the Netflix rom-com Set It Up in recent years. She also has a role in the upcoming sequel Zombieland: Double Tap this year.

Who else stars in The Politician?

This series is star-studded, as you may expect given who Murphy has worked with in the past. Gwyneth Paltrow (who is married to Murphy’s frequent collaborator and the series’ co-creator Brad Falchuk) plays Payton’s mother, Georgina Hobart.

Another familiar face is Jessica Lange, who has starred in many seasons of Murphy’s American Horror Story. She portrays Infinity’s mother (or perhaps grandmother), Rose. British actress Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody) will also feature as Astrid, Payton’s primary opponent for student body president.
