Popular TV Shows That Won’t Return Until 2018

2017 has already debuted its fair share of exciting new TV shows, but there are several favorite series that actually won’t be back this year. Despite their loyal fanbases, these hit comedies and genre dramas are being delayed for a full year or more, either due to their stars’ busy schedules or to allow more time for the development of their next seasons. Below, check out six popular TV shows that won’t return until 2018.

1. Westworld

After months of delays and behind-the-scenes issues, HBO’s adaptation of Westworld proved to be a big hit in its 2016 debut. But it looks like audiences will now be in for another long wait. In order to avoid the problems that plagued the production of its first season, showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy plan to write the scripts for all 10 episodes of Season 2 before filming. Considering how intricately plotted the series is, that will take some time, so fans shouldn’t expect to see more of Westworld until 2018.

2. Atlanta

Fans of Donald Glover’s Golden Globe-winning FX show will have to wait until 2018 for another season. The show won’t be producing more episodes in 2017, due to the actor’s busy production schedule this year. As most fans know, Glover has signed on to play the role of Lando Calrissian in the anticipated Han Solo Star Wars movie, which will film this year and will keep him very busy over the next few months.

3. Daredevil

Netflix’s lineup of Marvel shows has become very crowded, making it impossible to continue airing new seasons of each solo hero series every year. That means that some of the streamer’s original Marvel titles, like Daredevil, will have to take a backseat for the time being. Though the Charlie Cox starrer has been renewed for a third season, it won’t air until after Daredevil teams up with the other heroes in The Defenders, which will premiere this year.

The Daredevil spinoff, The Punisher, is also expected to debut this year, although it’s unclear whether Matt Murdock himself will make an appearance.

4. Luke Cage

Luke Cage made a big splash in its debut in 2016, so it’s no surprise that the show has earned a Season 2 pickup. While the series will be back for more episodes, it’ll likely be a while before audiences get to see them. As in the case of Daredevil, Luke Cage‘s next season will be delayed until the freshman season of The Defenders arrives.

5. Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones was renewed for a sophomore season quite some time ago, but Season 2 has yet to start filming. Why? As with the previously mentioned Marvel shows, star Krysten Ritter has been busy working on The Defenders. However, Ritter has suggested that the second season of Jessica Jones will film right after the team-up series, perhaps even overlapping at some point. If that’s the case, that could mean Season 2 will nab an early 2018 release date.

6. American Crime Story

The freshman season of American Crime Story, subtitled The People vs. OJ Simpson, earned overwhelming critical acclaim in 2016. As announced some time ago, the follow-up season of the anthology series will focus on Hurricane Katrina. But though the subject was settled on a while back, it’s taking longer than expected for the writers to plot out the story. That, combined with FX’s already busy schedule in 2017, means American Crime Story won’t be back until 2018. Luckily for fans, it’ll offer twice as much for the wait, with both Seasons 2 and 3 expected to premiere that year.
