Power Book II: Ghost: Mary J. Blige Says She Was Nervous to Star on the Show

Mary J. Blige has become a favorite Power Book II: Ghost, the highly-rated Starz drama series that follows Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.), the 18-year-old son of the late drug kingpin, James “Ghost” St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick). In Ghost, Tariq tries to balance life as a college student while getting into the drug game to earn money to get his mother, Tasha St. Patrick (Naturi Naughton), released from prison.

To earn the funds for his mother’s criminal defense attorney, Tariq teams up with the vicious queenpin Monet Stewart Tejada (Mary J. Blige). With her husband in prison, Monet is the head of the notorious Tejada crime family, who controls her three children, Cane (Woody McClain), Diana (LaToya Tonodeo), and Drew (Lovell Adams-Gray), with an iron fence.

Though Blige is beloved across the world, she was nervous to star on Power Book II: Ghost.

Mary J. Blige has given fans some hints about Monet’s journey in ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ Season 2

Power Book II: Ghost is currently filming the second season in New York City, and the stakes have never been higher. “In the second season, Tariq’s journey with the Tejada family will get even more complicated — and more dangerous — as he begins to understand the man he’s going to become,” Power creator Courtney A. Kemp told TVLine.

As we knew, Monet has ousted her son Cane from her inner circle pulling Tariq in toward her and things are about to get a lot more volatile. “Monet is just going off, completely,” Blige explained on The Angie Martinez Show about her character’s journey in season two. “She’s a real monster.”

Though Blige absolutely shines as Monet on Ghost, the Grammy-winner was nervous about starring in the series. “I was nervous, you know, my first time out on Power acting,” she told Martinez. “But I knew the character so well, so I was like … ‘Wow, I’m just gonna go out there and do it.’ And when I saw the response to the first season, I was like, ‘Wow, OK. I really know how to do this.’ So now it’s just giving me confidence for the second season where Monet is just going off.”

Blige says she was inspired by the women she saw growing up including her mother when it came to portraying Monet. “Everyone woman I know is a Monet, a hustler, my mum’s a hustler, a single-parent mum raising all of her children by herself in a hood, male-dominated,” she told Deadline via Express.

Shane Johnson was terrified to work with Mary J. Blige in ‘Power Book II: Ghost’

As much as Blige was nervous to portray Monet on Power Book II: Ghost, the legendary singer’s presence on the set was also intimating to another actor who is a massive fan of the My Life icon. Shane Johnson, who has portrayed Cooper Saxe on Power and in Power Book II: Ghost, was too scared to even speak with Blige at first.

“The truth is I haven’t really worked with Mary much, because the characters don’t really cross paths,” he told Tea with Tia during an Instagram Live. “I’m a huge, huge fan of hers, and I probably get a little bit uncomfortable around Mary to be honest.”

However, just like Blige, Johnson was able to get over his jitters. “She comes across really gentle and really present,” he said. “I think she’s incredibly talented, and she deserves all the incredible success that she’s had.”
