In January, Prince made a guest appearance on the TV show New Girl, and now the full song “FALLINLOVE2NITE,” which was performed by Prince and the show’s star Zooey Deschanel at the end of the episode, has been released.

According to the site Dr. Funkenberry, the song was released to iHeartRadio by Epic Records on Thursday. Deschanel tweeted a link to listen to the track as well. Prince fans had been wondering about whether the song would ever be fully released since the episode aired.

New Girl premiered on Fox in 2011 as a starring vehicle for Deschanel, who up until that time was mostly known for bit parts in films, her retro style, and being the dream girl of many a hipster boy. The sitcom is about Deschanel’s character Jess, who moves into a loft in Los Angeles with three men she barely knows after going through a rough breakup. Jess becomes fast friends with her new roommates, and the show explores love, friendship, and the experience of sharing an apartment.

In the episode starring Prince, which aired after the Super Bowl, Jess and her best friend Cece get invited to a party at the rock star’s mansion and Prince helps Jess overcome her fear of telling her boyfriend Nick that she loves him before she joins him to perform “FALLINLOVE2NITE” for his guests.

Prince is currently prepping a new album titled PLECTRUMELECTRUM, and it looks as though “FALLINLOVE2NITE” will appear on the record. The association with Epic is notable given that Prince has worked as an independent artist for the past five years. Dr. Funkenberry also claimed that Epic executive L.A. Reid attended a listening party for the album in New York City last month. Reid has previously said that he admires the ’80s icon’s work and regrets never having worked with Prince in the past.

Prince has plugged the album on The Arsenio Hall Show and there debuted the single “FUNKNROLL” in a live performance. Prince also gave a rare televised interview, revealing that he doesn’t own a cell phone and would be a teacher if he wasn’t a musician.

“One of the things that we try to do though is wait until we have other songs that go together with our favorites. That’s why it takes a long time to come out with albums, these days. Because you know not being under contract, there’s no rush to do it,” Prince said. He’s apparently been enjoying his freedom as an independent artist, so Reid and Epic will likely have to give complete creative control to the notoriously eccentric artist if they want to sign him.

While Deschanel may be more famous as an actress, having appeared in Almost Famous and 500 Days of Summer in addition to her role on the popular Fox comedy, she is also a musician and has long been a member of the indie duo She & Him with musical partner M. Ward.

The dancy electronic pop track is much different from the oldies-influenced rock of She & Him. It seems both innocuous and upbeat enough to become a hit. Deschanel’s presence on the song could help Prince reach a younger, hipper audience than would have otherwise been uninterested in his new album, the same way Prince’s guest spot on Deschanel’s show brought the sitcom more attention.

New Girl was recently picked up by Fox for another season.
