The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will be the first members of the British Royal Family in over 50 years to visit Cuba. No member of the royal family has stepped foot on the island since it came under communist rule. The whirlwind royal tour will last from March 17-29, 2019 and will include six different countries and one overseas territory.

The royal pair will make stops in St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, Cuba, and the Cayman Island and they will also take part in more than 50 engagements while on their tour. They should be back in the U.K. just in time to see Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcome their first child into the world.

Why are Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla Parker Bowles visiting Cuba?

Prince Charles has visited 45 out of the 53 nations in the Commonwealth throughout his life, but this will be his and the duchess’ first time in Cuba. Typically, royal tours are planned by the United Kingdom’s Foreign Office. Members of the British Royal Family are seen as ambassadors who visit with a country’s leaders and engage with its citizens. Though former American President Barack Obama visited the country in 2016 –no British Prime Minister has ever visited communist Cuba. The prince and the duchess‘ visit could be a way of testing the waters.

According to Prince Charles’ website, the visit will, “highlight the growing bilateral relationship with the U.K. and showcase some of the cultural links between the two countries.”

Is Duchess Camilla Parker Bowles nervous about visiting Cuba?

Prince Charles adores traveling, and trying new foods, but the Duchess of Cornwall is a homebody and she actually has a pretty bad fear of flying. In 2018, the duchess pulled out of a trip to accompany Prince Charles to Australia at the last minute. A spokesperson for Clarence House told Express U.K., “She decided a few weeks ago to firm up her plans. We were always looking at the Duchess coming. There are no health reasons. She is as fit as a flea. The Duchess does not like flying, but I think she sometimes has to embrace that fear and get on with it.”

However, the duchess‘ fear of flying isn’t the only reason why she’s nervous about visiting Cuba. Apparently, she’s also a bit apprehensive about the food. Baroness Hale told Daily Mail, “She did make a remark about she wasn’t so sure about the food.”
