Prince Charles Wanted to Expand Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal Roles Before Megxit

The British royal family has entered a new era. The monarchy has shifted forever amid Prince Andrew’s Jeffrey Epstein scandal, Megxit, and the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Following Prince Andrew’s ousting from royal life, the Sussexes and the Cambridges were thrust to the center of royal life. However, Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex had other plans for themselves.

Prince Charles has always hoped to have a more streamlined royal family, with a focus on himself, Prince William, and Prince George. However, the future Crowned King was also hopeful that his youngest son would remain at his brother’s side as Prince William worked to navigate the highest position in the royal family.

In fact, before Megxit, Prince Charles had some major plans for Prince Harry and Meghan.

Prince Charles thinks Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are a great fit

While Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge seemingly had some major concerns when Prince Harry introduced to them the Suits alum, Prince Charles was reportedly always “delighted” with Meghan. The 71-year-old was immediately taken with the duchess’ charm and wit.

“Harry and Meghan amplified the popularity of the royal family in the way that Prince Andrew and Fergie did at the time,” royal expert Nigel Cawthorne told The Sun.

Though Meghan says that she felt “unprotected” in the royal fold, the Prince of Wales reportedly tried to help her and Prince Harry the best that he could. “Charles genuinely made an attempt to support what Harry and Meghan were looking for as long as it wouldn’t upset other HRH’s,” Cawthorne explained. “In truth, however, there wasn’t a lot he could do apart from offering moral support.”

Prince Charles deeply regrets Megxit

Ultimately, the Sussexes’ decided that they could only survive if they made a life for themselves outside of the royal family. It was an ending that Prince Charles saw coming from the beginning. “I think [Prince Charles] likes strong women, but in The Firm, there is only room for one Queen,” Cawthorne told The Sun. “I think he foresaw considerable problems ahead for The Firm.”

Since he truly likes the duchess and hoped to expand the Sussexes’ roles in the royal family, the prince is said to have deep regrets about Megxit. According to Cawthorne,

He no doubt personally regrets the fact that he won’t see his son and family as much as he otherwise would have. He likes tradition and order.

Prince Charles had hoped to expand Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal roles

Prince Charles has never cared for his mother’s bulky version of the royal family. The Talko reported,

The truth is that the number of active family members has been decreasing and that might not be a coincidence. Of course, this would increase the workload for those who remain but it would allow for less drama, less opportunity for scandals, and create a more streamlined monarchy.

Still, Prince Charles never wanted the Sussexes to be inactive. “He was delighted with Meghan and, undoubtedly, would have continued to draw the Sussexes in more and more and would have tried to expand their role within the Firm as much as could be expected,” Cawthorne told Express. “Of course, when they decided to emigrate all that had to come to an end as there is no such thing as an absentee HRH.”

Now, it’s up to the Cambridges to keep the royal family afloat.
