Prince Charles Gives Update on Prince Philip’s Health

Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip, was hospitalized on Dec. 20, 2019, just days before the royal family gathered for the holidays at the Sandringham Estate he calls home.

After Philip was admitted to the hospital Buckingham Palace released a statement that read, “The Duke of Edinburgh traveled from Norfolk this morning to the King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment in relation to a pre-existing condition. The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’ doctor.”

Because of Prince Philip’s advanced age, there have been questions and speculation for years about his health. Here’s more on just how good of health he’s really in at 98 and the update Prince Charles gave about how his father is doing.

Prince Charles gives update on how Philip is feeling

Philip was released from the hospital on Tuesday and according to royal commentator Caroline Aston it was “entirely in keeping with the man for Prince Philip to have seemingly had no visitors during his hospital stay because he likes to make no fuss about anything.”

The Duke returned to Norfolk just in time to spend the holiday with the queen and other royals.

“His Royal Highness would like to thank everyone who sent their good wishes,” the Palace said.

Philip did not join the family on Christmas morning as they walked from the Sandringham house to mass at St. Mary Magdalene church. While fans didn’t get to see the family patriarch, they were given an update on how he’s feeling from the Prince of Wales.

On Dec. 23, Prince Charles was visiting flood-stricken areas in South Yorkshire when a woman asked him, “Sir, how is your father?”

“Alright,” Charles replied, before adding, “When you get to that age things don’t work so well.”

Philip’s health over the years

Prince Philip has had a few health-related issues over the past several years.

In June 2017, he was taken from Windsor to London and admitted to a hospital after being diagnosed with an infection. Then, in April 2018, he had hip replacement surgery. He was discharged the following day and six weeks later was able to attend Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding.

Prior to that, he underwent surgery on his right hand in 2014. A year earlier, he had an abdomen operation and in 2011 had a stent put in his heart after doctors found a blocked artery.

The Sun noted that the Duke of Edinburgh has been in relatively good health overall and reported that “He no longer shoots after having [the] stent in his heart… but he loves fishing and sometimes stands for hours in the River Dee.”

Prince Philip retired from royal duties in 2017. The last time he was seen in public was at Lady Gabriella Windsor’s wedding last May.
