Prince Charles Could Name Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Baby — Here’s Why
We are so close to meeting the newest member of the Mountbatten-Windsor family. Ahead of Meghan Markle’s due date, many royal family fans are anticipating the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s firstborn and cannot wait to find out if they are having a boy or girl, whether or not Queen Elizabeth will grant the royal baby a title, and what Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will name their baby.
Speaking of naming the royal baby, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might not be the ones to decide on a name for their prince or princess — Prince Charles could have the honor instead. Find out why the future king might decide on a name for Baby Sussex, ahead.
Will Prince Charles name the royal baby?
It’s no secret that Prince Charles has a close-knit relationship with his son and daughter-in-law. And, he’s allegedly over the moon about adding a new grandson or granddaughter to the mix. But, being grandpa isn’t Prince Charles’s only important duty for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal baby — Prince Charles might actually get to help name his grandson or granddaughter.
Although Queen Elizabeth isn’t stepping down from the throne in her old age, she has passed on many important duties to her son and future king, Prince Charles. And, one of said duties could have something to do with naming royal babies.
Per the royal family’s name rules, all parents-to-be — especially those closer in line to the British throne — must first consult Her Majesty before deciding on a baby name. However, she doesn’t exactly choose the name. The queen’s opinion matters to royal parents and is taken into account but, at the end of the day, it’s up to the parents to decide. That said, if Queen Elizabeth passes her duty onto Prince Charles, he could actually end up naming the royal baby — and it wouldn’t be the first time he’s done it.
As their father and father-in-law, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, without a doubt, respect Prince Charles and would be happy to consider any name he might choose. And, given his track record, he could even end up naming their baby altogether. According to Good Housekeeping, Prince Charles is the one behind Zara Phillips’ name. The Prince of Wales was allegedly drawn to the Greek meaning, “bright as the dawn.”

Royal family name rules
In addition to consulting the monarch, Prince Harry and Meghan must follow a handful of other royal family name rules, including naming their baby after a royal family member. While some parents-to-be have broken this rule in the past, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the very least will likely use one or two family names as their baby’s middle names.
In addition to choosing royal family names, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby will have not one, not two, but (at least) three names. Royals typically have a first name followed by two to three (sometimes more) middle names.
