This year marks Queen Elizabeth’s 93rd birthday. And, although she remains in good health (and spirits!), the palace is focused on transitioning Prince Charles and Prince William into their next roles as monarch and British heir. But royal duties aren’t the only thing that has been discussed. Apparently, Prince Charles has been brainstorming ways to honor his mother and her historic reign.
Will Prince Charles move to Buckingham Palace?
Many have wondered if Prince Charles will move into Buckingham Palace following Queen Elizabeth’s passing and his ascension. And, while the palace has yet to confirm the details, the answer appears to be “no.” According to Hello! Magazine, Prince Charles isn’t keen on the monarchy’s headquarters. “I know he is no fan of ‘the big house,’ as he calls the palace,” a source told the publication. “He doesn’t see it as a viable future home or a house that’s fit for purpose in the modern world. He feels its upkeep, bot from a cost and environmental perspective, is not sustainable.”
So, what will become of Buckingham Palace? The future king will most likely still host State Dinners, diplomats, and parties at the royal abode. He will also continue to use it as a venue space for ceremonies like Trooping the Color. And, some believe he will move his office to the family’s headquarters. But, Prince Charles also plans to make the space more available to the public.
Right now, certain rooms at Buckingham Palace are open to the public between July and October while the queen and her family members travel for the summer. Prince Charles plans to keep the palace a space for visitors but allegedly wants to open more rooms and keep the palace available for public education and enjoyment longer. “What’s to say Buckingham Palace can’t be opened to the public for at least six months, while keeping the state rooms pristine for use during big occasions,” a source proposed to Hello! Magazine. “That would be a modern approach and he’ll be thinking along those lines,” they dished.
A Buckingham Palace tribute
In addition to opening the palace to the public for longer periods of time, Prince Charles wants to pay tribute to his mother and the important role she has had in history. According to Hello! Magazine, the future king has thought up an exhibition at Buckingham Palace, dedicated to Queen Elizabeth’s historic reign. The honorable gesture would serve as an educational opportunity for those visiting the palace in an effort to keep the longest-reigning monarch’s legacy alive.
The palace has yet to confirm these memorial plans. However, if Prince Charles’s exhibition is anything like past Buckingham Palace showcases, it could include important garments (perhaps the queen’s coronation dress?), crown jewels, photographs with the many world leaders Her Majesty has worked with, and information on all of her accomplishments in her over 65 years of service.
