Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Are Likely to Lose Their Royal Roles Completely in the Coming Months
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry are about to become even less royal. After stepping away from their roles as working members of the royal family last year, the two put an ocean between them and the rest of Harry’s family by moving to America. Now, it turns out that they might be about to lose what little they have left of their royal positions.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle leave the royal family
For months, Harry and Meghan struggled with the constant criticism that the press put on them daily. Eventually, the two announced that they wanted to find a new arrangement where they could become financially independent from the crown. After speaking with his grandmother, it was determined that Meghan and Harry would leave their positions as senior working members of the royal family.
“Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family,” Queen Elizabeth II said in a statement.
“Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much loved members of my family,” she continued. “I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.”
The queen’s statement made it seem like she was effectively giving the Sussexes her blessing to leave.
“I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth, and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family,” she continued. “It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.”
What did Meghan and Harry have to give up?
In addition to no longer using their His and Her Royal Highness titles, the two also lost the ability to represent the commonwealth. Harry lost his military positions but was able to retain his ranks of Major, Lieutenant Commander, and Squadron Leader. The Sussexes were also initially able to keep their patronages, which they had been gifted by the queen.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are about to lose everything
Though they were able to retain their royal patronages and Harry’s military appointments initially, royal experts are expecting them to lose both in the coming months. According to People, this change is happening sooner than expected. The changes were initially not supposed to occur until Mar. 31, when the probation period of the separation was set to end.
Experts are expecting that the two will be asked to let go of their patronages, meaning Harry will have to relinquish the Rugby Football Union, the Rugby Football League, and the London Marathon and Meghan will have to let go of the National Theatre.
The fact that Harry and Meghan have made several deals on their own, like partnerships with Netflix and Spotify, has reportedly spurred this decision as the queen does not like members of the royal family to be “half in, half out.”
“It was clear to her from the start that a hybrid role is not an option,” a source told the outlet of the queen’s view on Harry and Meghan’s position in the family.
