Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Will Probably Earn a Lot Less for Public Speaking Than People Think
In the past several months, the public has received glimpses into the Sussexes’ plan for making money in the coming future. One way they could be adding to their bank account is by public speaking. Many celebrities and influential folks can charge a lot of money per speech, and it has been reported that Harry and Meghan would be highly compensated. However, now it looks like the number of their payment per speech might be lower than expected.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could reportedly earn as much as $1 million per speaking engagement
Harry and Meghan are currently signed with the Harry Walker Agency, a speaking agency that also represents other famous faces like Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and the Obamas. According to Page Six, the agency can help Harry and Meghan earn as much as $1 million per speech.
A source shared with Town & Country that the couple are likely to hold speeches about topics related to “the social issues the world is facing now including racial justice and gender equity, mental health, issues impacting women and girls and the environment—as well as the intersectional nature of these issues.”
An expert says Harry and Meghan might ‘realistically’ earn a lot less than $1 million
The price tag of $1 million has been thrown around in the press a lot, but a consultant shares with The Sun it’s unlikely Harry and Meghan could earn that much.
“The pair are fascinating, uniquely experienced individuals, who have a wide reach, who would have been a huge draw to a live audience pre COVID,” the expert says. “So back then figures between the 750k and $1m mark seemed steep, but possible.”
However, the consultant claims that “realistically their earnings range is closer to $250k to $400k.”
While this is definitely a lot more than most people can make in a year, it’s a far cry from the original payment of $1 million. According to the consultant, Harry and Meghan might have to lower their price because of the demands they reportedly have for their speaking engagements, such as the ability to choose the moderators and see who the sponsors are.
“The contract paperwork appears to read that the speakers have full control of the client’s event. It certainly raises eyebrows and will put off many potential large corporations,” the expert says. “Not many clients ever like inviting talent as star guests, who may be seen as running their event and telling them what to do.”
Harry and Meghan will also make money from their Netflix deal
However, public speaking will not be Harry and Meghan’s only job. The couple recently signed a deal with Netflix, which is reportedly worth $100 million. The deal will allow them to create programming content for the streaming giant.
“Our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope,” Harry and Meghan said in a statement, as reported by The New York Times. “As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us. Netflix’s unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that unlocks action.”
So far, not many details have been released about the specific shows and movies the Sussexes want to create. Nevertheless, if they are successful in this endeavor, it is likely to be a big way of making money for them in the coming years.
