Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s New Instagram Account Broke a Guinness World Record in Under Six Hours
Unless you’ve been living under a royalty-free rock, you’ve probably heard by now that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made a second official split from Kensington Palace – namely, an Instagram split.
Their move to the ‘gram has royal fans giddy with excitement at the prospect of glimpsing even more of their private life and updates on their comings and goings. But don’t get too crazy – it’s unlikely you’ll find any selfies of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex lounging in bed with baby Sussex or anything like that. As their first post explains, Harry and Meghan will use the account to spread awareness to their causes.
Clearly, they have a rapt audience eager to consume that message. The newly created account even broke a Guinness World Record within hours of launching.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new Instagram account went viral
With just a single gallery post the account was attracting followers by the thousands. It became so popular so quickly that it even broke a Guinness World record in under six hours.
For now, Harry and Meghan don’t boast the most overall followers – but in a few weeks that could change. On launch day – April 2, 2019 – the account attracted one million followers in 5 hours and 45 minutes. As of this moment, @sussexroyal has 2.5 million followers and counting.
The mad rush to follow even caused Instagram to crash for a short while. Talk about popularity.
No one is exactly sure what kinds of things they’ll post
Unlike Kardashian Instagram accounts, it’s unlikely that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be posting sexy bikini photo shoots or promoting products with sponsored ads. But they are planning to spread a message.
Their only post so far includes a gallery of images of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex engaged in different royal activities. The implication is clear – they’ll be using one of the most popular social media platforms in the world to spread their message.
The post caption says: ‘”Welcome to our official Instagram; we look forward to sharing the work that drives us, the causes we support, important announcements, and the opportunity to shine a light on key issues. We thank you for your support, and welcome you to @sussexroyal.”- Harry & Meghan.”
Posts might be similar to those on @kensingtonroyal – but this time they will only focus on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and their specific activities. Fans are absolutely thrilled about this – and it all may be proof that they really are more popular than Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Who held the Instagram follower record before?
Before Harry and Meghan started smashing Guinness World Records, there were other Insta users who achieved 1 million followers in a short amount of time. Korean pop star Kang Daniel reached the milestone with @thisisdaniel_k in 11 hours and 36 minutes and was the record holder before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle came along.
Before Daniel, Pope Francis’ account @franciscus earned 1 million followers in 12 hours.
