Prince Harry Broke Royal Protocol by Doing Something Very Ordinary

Modern royals are doing modern things, even if it means breaking stuffy royal protocol from time to time. Case in point, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have broken a rule by doing something that most people wouldn’t give a second thought to — closing their own car door.

How Prince Harry broke protocol

It’s just something that royals don’t do… closing their own car doors, as they have people to do that for them. Harry, perfectly capable, took it upon himself to push the door shut when attending the 5th anniversary of the Invictus Games. Easy peasy — and a total violation of royal protocol.

A member of the royal household is supposed to take care of the task of opening and closing car doors, something that’s been done since, well, forever.

Perhaps an adjustment should be made to this antiquated rule?

Is it a big deal?

It’s probably a non-issue and the Queen has been known to break a rule or two before, so Prince Harry is in good company.

Some of the rules the Queen has broken include accepting flowers from a fan, attending a funeral service for her royal aide, and making an exception to the rule of ‘no touching’ when she met first lady Michelle Obama in 2009.

Obama shook hands with Queen Elizabeth and put an arm around her back. She recalled the moment in her book Becoming: “If I hadn’t done the proper thing at Buckingham Palace, I had at least done the human thing. I daresay the Queen was okay with it, too, because when I touched her, she only pulled closer, resting a gloved hand lightly on the small of my back.”

Meghan Markle has broken a few royal protocol rules, too

Markle may not have been in the know about the rule when she committed exactly the same infraction as her husband last year while attending her first solo event at the Royal Academy of Arts.

The duchess doesn’t always adhere to royal protocol and her every move is criticized, from her lavish baby shower, to the way she was spotted holding baby Archie, to being mom-shamed for leaving her baby with her husband to support pal Serena Williams at the U.S. Open.

Prince Harry most recently hilariously broke protocol when he made a naughty joke. Prior to that, he came under fire for re-enacting a chimp greeting with Jane Goodall.

Twitter responds

Of course, no one was too put out by Harry’s small oops, with many royal fans having a laugh over it. Comments included: “What’s next? Dressing himself?,” “He’s gonna put that poor guy in the passenger seat out of a job,” and “He’ll be squeezing his own toothpaste next.”

Another commenter joked: “what on earth is the world coming to when prince harry had to shut the car door himself?”

One royal fan pointed out how ridiculous it is that the Sussexes come under fire for everything, noting: “Clearly nothing they do will ever be right! The royals & people aren’t a fan of Meghan and will therefore pick apart every freakin move they make!! LET THEM LIVE, shutting a door can’t be the end of the royal world… times are changing.”
