Prince Harry Did Not Properly Warn Meghan Markle About the Pressure of Royal Life
Trying to warn someone about their future can be an impossible task. No matter how honest you get about the risks, some people just need to experience things for themselves. Just ask Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Before Meghan and Harry took their budding relationship public, she had already experienced fame for herself. Unlike the other former royal girlfriends, who never had flashbulbs shoved in their faces until becoming involved with Prince Harry, Markle was a Hollywood actress with a strong fan base. She had walked red carpets and been the subject of tabloid gossip. Surely she could handle it, right?
It turns out that being a moderately successful television actress is nothing compared to being a royal wife. And though Meghan Markle might have thought she was prepared for the spotlight, the reality of living under public scrutiny is way harsher than she realized it would be.
The media attention is more intense now than ever before
Though Princess Diana had a notoriously complicated relationship with the press, things are arguably worse now for royal wives including Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. First, everyone has smartphones with cameras and video recording built in. Any time these two women appear in public, every smirk and whispered comment is being meticulously documented.
Who could forget the time Prince Harry supposedly ignored Meghan Markle at a baseball game? Or the time he chided her to, “Turn around,” and “Look,” during the Queen’s birthday celebration? None of those moments would have been captured without amateur cell phone videos.
Prince Harry probably tried to warn Meghan how crazy it would be
Before taking their relationship public, Prince Harry no doubt had some serious conversations with Meghan Markle about how drastically her life would change if she was dating him publicly. He’d grown up in the public spotlight and was used to it. Plus, plenty of his former girlfriends went on record saying how difficult it was dealing with the attention.
But Meghan must have heard the risks and agreed to take on the relationship anyway. She just may not have realized the gravity of her decision. “We talk a lot about people coming into the royal family being prepared for what it’s going to be like,” former ITV News royal editor Tim Ewart told Yahoo UK.
“Kate and Meghan must expect to be the center of attention, they have no idea, absolutely no idea what it’s really like.”
Before Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was never ‘hunted by paparazzi’
Meghan Markle addressed this very issue during her engagement interview in 2017.
“I mean, I think also because there was a misconception that because I have worked in the entertainment industry that this would be something I would be familiar with. But even though I’ve been on my show for I guess six years at that point and working before that I’ve never been part of tabloid culture.”
“I’ve never been in pop culture to that degree and lived a relatively quiet life even though I focused so much on my job.”
Does Meghan Markle regret marrying Prince Harry?
That brings us to the next obvious question: Considering how difficult her life is now, mostly because of media attention, does Meghan Markle regret pursuing a relationship with Prince Harry?
Of course, no one can know the real answer in her heart. But based on how much she clearly loves her husband and their newborn son, it seems silly to think she’d go back and make a different choice.
The one benefit of having such a strong public presence is it brings attention to issues that the Duchess of Sussex cares about. So far Meghan Markle is using her popularity for good while trying to maintain a private life with her family as best she can.
It’s a delicate balance, but the Duchess of Sussex is determined to make it work!
