Prince Harry Finally Addresses the Private Plane Controversy But Fans Aren’t Feeling His Explanation

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been the source of quite a few controversies. And by controversies, we mean things that the British media have blown way out of proportion. The latest of which occurred when the royal couple decided to go on vacation in Nice with their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor. The biggest issue that the public had with the trip was that the family flew by private jet to France.

Harry and Markle have talked at length about sustainability and climate change so their use of a private jet shocked both fans and critics alike.

Elton John defends Markle and Harry

The use of the jet actually turned out to be a gift from singer Elton John. John took to Instagram to defend the couple after people began bashing them on social media.

“I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week,” he wrote.

“Prince Harry’s mother, Diana Princess Of Wales was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death.”

“After a hectic year continuing their hard work and dedication to charity, David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safety and tranquility of our home,” he continued. “To maintain a high level of much-needed protection, we provided them with a private jet flight. To support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint™.”

“I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan’s commitment to charity and I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis.”

Harry speaks out

It’s been weeks since the plane controversy, but Harry finally addressed the issue at an event in Amsterdam.

“We can all do better and while no one is perfect, we all have a responsibility for our own individual impact,” he said. “The question is what we do to balance it out.”

Later, when asked directly about the situation, he told the audience that it all came down to safety.

“I came here by commercial,” he said. “I spend 99% of my life traveling the world by commercial. Occasionally there needs to be an opportunity based on a unique circumstance to ensure my family is safe and it’s genuinely as simple as that.”

Fan reactions

Though Harry’s reason for taking the private jet seemed perfectly reasonable, some fans were not having it.

“I don’t want to be told ‘We can all do better’ by a man who has been protected from realities like keeping a roof over his head & who works on a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ basis,” one person tweeted. “Prince Harry is turning out to be even more of a nauseating virtue-signaller than his wife.”

“I would respect him very much when he walks away from his privilege,” another person said.

“My dear #PrinceHarry,” another user said. “Please shut up before making a bigger fool of yourself. Just stop talking about flights and climate change in the same sentence. We know you are a hypocrite. You don’t need to prove it again and again.”
