Prince Harry Gave Baby Sussex the Most Perfect Nickname

It’s no secret that Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle are over the moon with excitement about welcoming their brand-new little baby to the world. The two were married in a grand ceremony in May 2018 and were anxious to get started on their family.

In October 2018, Meghan Markle’s pregnancy was announced, and everything since has been a whirlwind. Fans are speculating on everything from the baby’s gender to what the hair color will be, but the royal couple removed one mystery when, on a trip to New Zealand, Prince Harry revealed what nickname they have for Baby Sussex. It’s the most perfect nickname, too!

The challenge Prince Harry faces with a nickname

Although many details of the royal’s lives are on display for all to see, there’s one tradition that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will definitely uphold. That is, the gender of their baby will be kept a closely-guarded secret until the actual birth. While royal fans are taking bets on whether the baby is a boy or a girl, with sentimental opinion seeming to favor a girl, the royal pair have admitted that they themselves have no idea, which doesn’t make coming up with a nickname easy.

Meghan Markle has responded to fans asking about the gender by saying that she doesn’t know if she’s carrying a boy or girl, and will be surprised right along with everyone else. Prince Harry, on the other hand, has been vocal about his desire for a baby girl, likely due to the extremely close relationship that he shared with his mother, the late Princess Diana.

With Markle’s due date estimated at the end of April or beginning of May, fans don’t have much longer to wait. Markle’s baby bump is growing by the day, and she highlights it in a wide selection of couture outfits and figure-hugging designs. In spite of some public backlash about her habit of cradling her bump, it’s likely that she’s just excited about the impending arrival of Baby Sussex.

What nickname do Prince Harry and Meghan call Baby Sussex?

Every expecting couple has a cute nickname for their baby – it helps both parents feel even closer to the baby, especially when they don’t yet know the gender or haven’t really decided on a name. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are no exception. During a work trip to New Zealand, Prince Harry told the crowd that he and Markle, along with “their little bump” were very happy to be there, which brought the entire group to smiles and cheers.

While “little bump” seems to be their nickname of choice for the baby, Prince Harry has also been known to refer to the little one as their “royal-to-be.” They could even have other nicknames for the baby they don’t reveal publicly, as a way of keeping some part of the pregnancy just for themselves. Nonetheless, “little bump” and “royal-to-be” are perfect gender-neutral nicknames. Both nicknames also convey their excitement to welcome a baby into the royal family.

As to the baby’s actual name, it’s anyone’s guess. While the couple will likely choose at least one traditional name for their baby, likely the first name, they are known to be royal rule-breakers, and could also go the untraditional route, especially for the baby’s middle name. In keeping with Prince Harry’s family tradition, their baby will most likely have three names in total, with priority given to names steeped in royal tradition like Victoria or Anne.

It’s no doubt a daunting task, but fortunately, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle still have some time to decide on the final name. If by chance the baby is born and they still haven’t decided on a name, they do have a grace period – Prince Harry’s brother, Prince William, and his wife, Kate Middleton, took about a week in order to choose the perfect name for their third child, Prince Louis.
