Prince Harry ‘Married His Mother’ When He Chose Meghan Markle — Here’s Why
Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, married his mother, the late Princess Diana, when he chose to marry former Suits actress, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex (check out unseen photos from the show Patrick J. Adams shared on Instagram earlier this week). At least, that’s what a historian’s claimed. Here, learn how their wedding made history.
During an interview with the Daily Mail per Express, historian David Starkey remarked that in some ways 35-year-old Prince Harry married his mother when he exchanged vows with Markle on May 19, 2018, at St. George’s Chapel in a lavish royal wedding.
Princess Diana behaved like ‘she’d been born in California’
Princess Diana and Markle have similar behaviors, he said. One similarity is that Princess Diana behaved like a celebrity — whatever that means — and Markle’s no different.
“Meghan is behaving like a celebrity, but Diana behaved like a celebrity,” Starkey said.
He continued, saying Princess Diana’s actions didn’t reflect her high-class English upbringing. Rather she behaved like a born and bred California girl.
“I always said that Diana was a strange phenomenon, she was the daughter of an English earl, but she behaved as though she’d been born in California, which I think may very well be one of the things that attracted Harry to Meghan,” Starkey said before adding, “He’s married his mother!”
Markle, a California native, grew up in the city of Los Angeles where she attended an all-girls Catholic school (learn the heartbreaking reason she kept busy during her lunch period as a teen).
She’s had an affinity for yoga, organic food (in her pre-Prince Harry days, she said in an interview she stuck to a vegan diet during the week and let loose on the weekend), and holistic practices for years.
The Duchess of Sussex brought some California vibes with her to England when she moved into Nottingham Cottage with her future husband. The couple visited a London-based health and wellness shop ahead of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor’s birth in May 2019. See the pictures, here.
Starkey also said Prince Harry’s insecurities as a child may have been part of the reason why he married someone similar to his late mother.
“Lots of insecure boys marry their mothers,” he said.
Others have noticed similarities between Diana and Markle
This isn’t the first time Markle’s been compared to her late mother-in-law. The same thing’s happened to Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, since she married Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, in 2011.
Recently, journalist Katie Couric said Princess Diana would’ve loved Markle and Middleton, calling them “thoroughly modern women” who “exhibit the best of Diana’s qualities, which include caring about something greater than yourself and committing yourself to worthwhile causes.”
And royal biographer, Andrew Morton, also pointed out similarities between the late royal and Markle. He said as a teen Markle wanted to be “Princess Diana 2.0” but ultimately “what unites both of them is the desire in wanting to give back and make a difference.”
Whether or not Prince Harry “married his mother” as Starkey put it, we think the Duke and Duchess of Sussex make a fantastic pair.
