Traditionally, royal family members wait until a baby’s arrival to find out the gender of their baby. And, although Meghan Markle admitted their firstborn’s gender is a surprise, some sources report that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex actually know whether they are having a baby boy or girl. If those reports are accurate, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will welcome a son this spring.

Ahead of their due date, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have likely spent some time considering potential names. And, it’s possible that Prince Harry wants to pay homage to his mother, Princess Diana. But, if they are having a boy, “Diana” might not be on their list of potential names — which is why some fans believe the couple could choose to name their son Spencer, after Diana’s maiden name.

If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle name their firstborn after Princess Diana, it doesn’t technically break royal rules (which recommends naming a baby after royal family members). However, naming their baby Spencer could raise an issue. Since Spencer isn’t technically a royal family name, which means the queen could disagree with their plan. However, the decision is ultimately up to them and Prince Harry is ½ Spencer.

The Spencer family is also one of the oldest aristocratic families in the United Kingdom and has several ties to the royal family, which makes it possible for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to consider breaking protocol for their baby’s name.

In addition to Spencer, some also believe Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could name their son Albert, James, Philip, and Arthur, after King Arthur.

If the rumors aren’t true and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are having a baby girl, the parents-to-be have some adorable name options for their firstborn. Elizabeth and Diana are obvious top contenders since they would pay homage to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Harry’s late mother. However, some also think that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might draw inspiration from their feminist ideals to decide on a name.

In honor of strong, powerful women leaders, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could choose to name their daughter Victoria after Queen Victoria. The legendary monarch ruled from 1837 to 1876. Additionally, they might go with Alexandra, which means “helper of mankind,” and falls in line with their passions for philanthropy. Another potential winner? Margaret after Queen Elizabeth’s sister and infamous royal family rule-breaker, Princess Margaret. Mary and Alice are also top picks.
