Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expecting their bundle of joy very soon. With the royal baby watch in full swing, many royal family fans are getting serious about name predictions for the so-called “royal-to-be.” And, one of the top contenders has a very special — read: very on-brand — meaning.
What will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle name their firstborn? See some of the top royal baby name predictions, ahead.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle baby names
At this point, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby’s gender is still fairly unknown. The Duchess of Sussex revealed that they plan to keep it a surprise, but sources close to the royals have also come out saying that they know the gender and shared it with friends. If the source are true, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will welcome a baby boy this spring. However, there’s a 50% chance that the reports (or, at least, the gender) are false, which means there’s still hope for those predicting a little princess. If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle do have a daughter, they have plenty of baby names to choose from. But, only a couple of the royal baby name predictions standout as potential winners.
One top contender is Alexandra. The name belongs to Queen Elizabeth’s great-grandmother, Queen Alexandra. It means “helper of mankind,” which is very on-brand for the philanthropic parents-to-be. In addition to Alexandra, some royal fans believe the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could name their daughter Victoria, after Queen Victoria. The iconic woman ruled from 1837 until 1876 and the proud feminists might choose to honor her legacy by naming their firstborn after her.
With rumors of a potential baby boy, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have plenty of honorable names to choose from. At the forefront are Charles, Philip, and Albert (King George VI’s birth name). However, there are some more outside of the box ideas, too. One of the most unique — and super sweet — royal baby names is Spencer, in honor of Prince Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana. Spencer was Diana’s maiden name and naming their firstborn son after Princess Diana’s family would be a special way for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to honor that part of their baby’s roots.
Royal name rules
Names are a big deal in the royal family. So much so that most parents-to-be stick to a strict set of royal name rules to help them decide on their Prince or Princess’s name. See the royal protocol Prince Harry and Meghan Markle must follow, below.
Consult the queen
Before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can make a final decision on their royal baby’s name, they must consult the queen. While her opinion isn’t an end all be all, it’s certainly well respected and could alter their decisions.
Choose a royal family name
Not all members of the royal family choose a royal family name such as Alexander, George, or Edward, but it’s highly recommended. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are known for breaking the rules, but this is one they might not try to bend.
At least two middle names
Most royal family members have at least two to three middle names, so it should come of no surprise if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby has a very long list of noble names.
