When Will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Share the First Photo of Baby Sussex?
While Meghan Markle’s exact due date isn’t entirely known, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expecting to meet their firstborn baby sometime in the next few weeks.
Earlier this week, Kensington Palace released a statement that confirmed Meghan Markle’s birth plan and gave insight into when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might introduce their son or daughter to the world. And, in true Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fashion, they are opting out of royal traditions.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very grateful for the goodwill they have received from people throughout the United Kingdom and around the world as they prepare to welcome their baby,” Kensington Palace said in the statement. “Their royal highnesses have taken a personal decision to keep the plans around the arrival of their baby private. The Duke and Duchess look forward to sharing the exciting news with everyone once they have had an opportunity to celebrate privately as a new family,” they added.
When will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle release photos of Baby Sussex?
Reading between the lines, it seems unlikely that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will participate in a post-birth photocall on the steps of the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital, like most other modern royal parents. Additionally, they probably won’t break the news — or share photos — until they’ve had at least a few days (and possibly a week or more!) to themselves.
In modern times, the first photo of a royal baby often consists of a proper photocall with his or her mother and father. Even if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex don’t pose for a photo after welcoming their firstborn into the world, they could still opt for a formal visual announcement outside of Kensington Palace or Windsor Castle (which is just down the road from their new family home, Frogmore Cottage).
While they don’t oppose traditional photocalls — they stood outside of Kensington Palace after their engagement announcement for one! — Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could get a little creative (like they did with their engagement photos and Christmas card) and share more intimate family portraits of the three of them with their son or daughter.
Royal baby birth announcement
In addition to the first photos of Baby Sussex, the royal family will also share an official birth announcement once Prince Harry and Meghan Markle give their communications team the green light.
Following a royal birth, the monarchy alerts the media and public with a traditional birth announcement outside of Buckingham Palace. The announcement is typed up, framed, and posted on an easel for all to see. It is likely that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby will receive the same honors upon its much-anticipated arrival.
Prince Louis’s birth announcement read: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 1101 hours. The baby weighs 8 lbs 7 oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry, and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.” Since the official announcement was posted on the day of Prince Louis’s birth, it was marked with the date at the top right corner. If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wait to tell the public, the announcement will likely include details of their baby’s birthdate within the statement.
