This Is How Much It Cost Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to Move to Canada

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex are officially living their best lives outside of the British royal family. In early January, shortly after returning from a six-week royal hiatus on Vancouver Island, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they would be stepping down as senior members of the British royal family.

Initially, the Sussexes thought they might be able to remain part-time working royals. Unfortunately, that didn’t quite work out. Instead, the duo have agreed to step back from their roles completely in order to become financially independent.

Since they are no longer being supported by the queen, the Sussexes will have to find a way to make money on their own. However, their move to Canada just put a massive dent in their net worth.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are happy with their new lives in Canada

The Sussexes chose to walk away from their royal lives after the duchess was bullied and harassed by the British public and press. “The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly,” Prince Harry revealed in a candid speech.“It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And I know I haven’t always got it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option.”

Markle, in particular, is “so happy” with her new life. An insider explained to US Weekly, “She doesn’t come from millions. She’s worked hard to get to where she is today. Meghan loves the idea of being the breadwinner. She has no plans to do another show like Suits, but Harry’s been encouraging her to do more voice-over work, writing, producing and directing in her free time.” As for Prince Harry, “He’s really excited about the next chapter in their lives.”

This is how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might make money moving forward

Since they are no longer employees of the queen, the Sussexes will be making money on their own to support themselves. They will even pay rent for their U.K. residence, Frogmore Cottage. “We could easily compare them to any former presidents,” Royal commentator and author Kristen Meinzer explained to Business Insider. “My mind keeps going to Barack and Michelle Obama and how [they] make money. The reason I compare the two is that they’re already friends with each other and I would put them on the same level in terms of fame.”

The Sussexes already have a decent net worth, to begin with. They are worth roughly $30 million together.

It cost Prince Harry and Meghan Markle £300,000 to move to Canada

Since they no longer have the support of The Crown, the Sussexes got their own things shipped to Canada from the U.K. Shipping company 1st Move International just calculated a quote that the Sussexes could have been given and it cost a pretty penny.

Shipping household goods and personal items from Frogmore Cottage would cost somewhere around £279,000. Another £35,000 would be needed to move luggage and trunks. This is a lower cost quote presuming items were transported via water and not air. It would take over a month to transport. The couple would also need insurance for pricy items as well as duty, tax or additional storage in Vancouver.

Somehow, we think the Sussexes think this hefty price tag is well worth it.
