The jury is still out on whether or not Prince Harry and Meghan Markle know their baby’s gender. But, one thing is for certain: Royal family fans won’t find out whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are having a boy or girl until the little royal-to-be’s spring arrival. And, they might have to wait even longer to find out what the new parents will name their firstborn.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby name

Everyone wants to know: What will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle call their first child? And, now, with Meghan Markle’s due date fast approaching, the bets are on.

If the Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcome a baby girl this spring — and, many believe they will — the parents-to-be could decide on a handful of family names. People reported in November 2018, that many placed bets on Elizabeth, Alice, and Victoria (all of which tied for the top contender). However, new reports from Express, reveal that Diana and Victoria are now in the lead.

Should Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcome a little prince this spring (reports suggest they are — and that the duchess allegedly revealed the news to her friends at her baby shower), the duke and duchess have a list of options as well. The royal baby name predictions for a boy are Albert, Arthur, and Alexander, according to People’s early reports. However, Cosmopolitan reports that Philip is also in the running, in honor of Prince Harry’s almost 98-year-old grandfather and Baby Sussex’s great-grandfather.

Regardless of what names they decide on, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have a big decision to make — one that they are not allowed to make alone.

How Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will choose their baby’s name

As far as we know, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might already know what they plan to call their firstborn (or, at the very least, have an idea). However, one very important thing has to happen before they make it official upon Baby Sussex’s arrival. How will Meghan Markle and Prince Harry choose their baby’s name? First, they will need to meet with the queen.

Like most anything in the royal family, there are a set of guidelines that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex must follow when they name their family — one of which requires the queen’s approval. Even if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are in love with a name — which will most likely be a family name — they must run it by Her Majesty first. Should the queen have a different opinion, the duke and duchess will seriously consider her name suggestions. However, they aren’t required to name their baby based on the queen’s suggestion (though her opinion does matter).

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might consider advice from Prince Charles before landing on a name. As the future monarch — and their baby’s grandfather — the Prince of Wales’s opinion is also important to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

In addition to the queen and future king, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might have a little fun with their name selections — and draw inspiration from how Prince William and Kate Middleton named Prince George. When they were pregnant with their firstborn, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge placed pieces of paper with names on the floor and had their dog, Lupo sniff them out. Lupo stopped on “George” and the rest is history. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are very close to their fur babies and might choose the same technique as their brother and sister-in-law.
