Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Moving to Buckingham Palace?

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have a lot of change in their future. Not only are the royals expecting their first child together this spring, but they are also moving into not one but two new homes. Ahead of Meghan Markle’s due date, the duke and duchess are headed to the countryside where they will raise their baby in their new family home, Frogmore Cottage in Windsor. But, that won’t be their only place of residence.

In addition to Frogmore Cottage, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are cutting ties with Kensington Palace and moving into a new London abode. Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moving to Buckingham Palace? Find out, ahead.

Prince William and Prince Harry’s Kensington Palace split

Last week, Buckingham Palace confirmed what has now been guessed for the last five months: Prince William and Prince Harry are officially going their separate ways. In order for Prince William and Kate Middleton to step into their future roles, the royal family feels it is necessary for the two couples to separate their royal courts and become their own households. But what does that mean for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle? Apparently, lots of moving.

In the official statement, the palace confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are cutting ties with Kensington Palace altogether and hiring a new communications staff. The staff they currently have will remain at Kensington under Prince William and Kate Middleton’s office. And, although they wanted their own freedom from Buckingham Palace, the queen found the request unnecessary and plans to move the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s London offices to Buckingham Palace. But, will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also move to the royal family headquarters?

Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moving to Buckingham Palace?

Right now, the queen’s staff works in Buckingham Palace’s West Attic (also known as the Footman’s Floor), which has been renovated into an open floor office space. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s staff will join the 120 employees working under the queen.

Additionally, some suggest the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might also make Buckingham Palace their London home. That way, they have a place to stay when in the city for extended work and meetings. However, much renovations on the palace’s East Wing (where much of its inhabitants live) starts this spring and many royal family members have had to move to St. James’s Palace for the time being.

If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle do decide to make Buckingham Palace their home away from home, they might need to find temporary accommodations until the extensive renovations are completed. That means, they could reside at St. James’s Palace with the rest of Buckingham Palace’s royal residence, or they might even stay at Nottingham Cottage — their current royal residence — at Kensington Palace until they can move to Buckingham Palace.

That said, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are probably in no hurry to live in London. After all, once the baby comes, the two will take maternity and paternity leave. As part of their official separation from Prince William and Kate Middleton, they also plan to continue their philanthropy efforts and could do so from outside the city.
