Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Will Face ‘Relentless Scrutiny’ Because of Their Netflix Deal, Source Says
They also wanted to be in control of their work and careers without royal rules and traditions interfering. Now, amid their $100 million dollar deal with Netflix, the Sussxes are doing just that.
The couple has announced a deal that includes, documentaries, docu-series, feature films, scripted shows, and children’s programming. However, one royal expert fears that it will only keep the Sussexes sitting squarely in the spotlight.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle kept their Netflix deal a secret
With a massive new home which meant increased living expenses, most royal fans and experts knew that the Sussexes had something up their sleeves. Rumors even swirled that they were shopping a “secret project” around Hollywood.
Now, we know that their multi-million dollar Netflix deal was in the works. However, the pair kept their new venture secret, even from Queen Elizabeth II. A royal insider explained to US Weekly,
Harry did not inform the Queen about the Netflix deal. Her Majesty is all too aware of the pitfalls of when senior royals embark on lucrative projects—Prince Edwards’ production flop and some of the deals Sarah Ferguson has signed over the years to name a few. Her view is simple, the Royals are not for sale and danger surrounds high profile roles outside of the institution itself. But knowing her grandson Harry as she does, the Queen will know there would have been little chance of talking Harry and Meghan out of it.
The royal family is very unhappy with the Sussexes’ Netflix deal
Though the Sussexes relationship with the remaining members of the British royal family has improved drastically over the past several months, this Netflix deal may throw a wrench in all of this change.
Like the queen, the royals are not at all pleased with the Sussexes’ relationship with Netflix. A source revealed to Entertainment Tonight that the royals are, “concerned Meghan and Harry’s deal will distract from the work of other senior royals including Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William, Prince Charles, and Camilla Parker Bowles.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are going to face ‘relentless scrutiny’
Despite the Sussexes’ efforts to spread knowledge and to do good with their Netflix deal, it could backfire in a big way. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Express U.K. that the deal leaves the Sussexes even more vulnerable to tabloid culture. He explained,
The way they handle their huge deal with Netflix and what they appear in their shows will be subject to relentless scrutiny to see how their royal connections are used, if at all. Were Harry, for example, to appear in a documentary about Diana, it would undoubtedly benefit charities. And when they are able to launch their non-profit charitable foundation, Archewell, they will undoubtedly put enormous emphasis on backing the causes they are committed to – diversity, gender equality, the environment, and mental illness. Harry, of course, has also his Invictus charity and Sentebale in Lesotho. Their work for Netflix will be linked to these causes too.
At this point we think the Sussexes can handle whatever comes their way.
