Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Could Return to Royal Life If They Wanted To

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry’s break from the British royal family wasn’t exactly seamless. The prince and the duchess shocked the royal family and the world when they announced they would be departing the U.K. and resigning from their roles senior working royals. The announcement came after two years of animosity and tensions between the other roles, and the British press and public.

It seems like Prince Harry was unhappy as the third-wheel to Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge for some time. He believed that marrying Meghan, who is outspoken and had a ton of ideas about modernizing The Firm would bring the change he needed to sustain as a royal. It did not pan out the way that he expected.

Now, the Sussexes are living in Meghan’s hometown of LA but the truth is, they could return to royal life if they really wanted to.

Prince Harry wanted a clean break from royal life

Stemming from Princess Diana’s death, Prince Harry has always had issues with the intrusive U.K. press. It didn’t help that Meghan, the woman that he loves, was kept at an arms-length by his brother, Prince William, and villainized in the media.

“The truth is Harry had been unhappy for a long, long time,” a source told The Sun“He wanted to move in the direction that they did and had been considering it for more than a year. Meghan supported Harry’s decision. But there was more than one occasion where she asked him if he was certain it was what he wanted. And she always made it clear she would support him in whatever he did.”

In the end, Prince Harry was keen to make a clean break when the Sussexes’ original idea to be part-time royals was rejected.

Queen Elizabeth doesn’t believe that Megxit will work

Though Queen Elizabeth has always supported Meghan and Prince Harry, she’s not exactly convinced that they are going to make it on their own without the British royal family. It’s also concerning considering the fact that they cannot under any circumstances capitalize and make money off of their royal status.

Queen Elizabeth has implemented a 12-month review of Megxit to see how things go. In the Channel 5 documentary, Royals: A family in crisis, Julie Montagu Viscountess Hinchingbrooke explained,

Putting that 12-month review in place goes to show you that the Queen will be watching them like a hawk. She will want to see everything that they are doing, what they are making money from and how it is affecting the Royal Family. So there must be some concern from the Queen about what their intentions are.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could return to royal life if they wanted to

Though the Sussexes seem intent on their new path in LA with the forthcoming launch of their new venture, Archewell Foundation, they could technically return to the royal family whenever they want.

In Finding Freedom, royal experts Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand write via The Times,

The Queen made it clear to Harry that she would always support him in whatever he decided to do. Though a 12-month trial period had already been promised to Harry earlier in the year, their conversation was also a reminder that should he and Meghan ever want to return to their roles, they were always welcome It’s been made very clear they can come back whenever they want, when they’re ready.

However, after the way Meghan was treated by the royal family and people in the U.K. we highly doubt she would ever return to the U.K. even if Prince Harry wanted to.
