Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Son, Archie, Could Be in Danger in Canada

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are settling into their new, more private lives. The royal couple made a shocking announcement earlier this year — they were leaving the family. While the negative media definitely played a role in the couple’s departure, they also wanted to be more hands-on parents to their son, Archie. But experts suggest that Archie might actually be in more danger in Canada.

Harry and Meghan left the royal family in January

Late last year, Harry and Meghan took a six-week hiatus from royal life to spend some time alone during the holidays. The two resided on Vancouver Island in Canada, and when they returned, people assumed it would be back to business as usual. But to the world’s surprise, Harry and Meghan announced that they would “step back” from their roles as senior royals.

As things started to unfold, Meghan and Harry learned they could not continue to work for the queen while also achieving financial independence. They ultimately made the decision to leave their roles as working royals altogether.

The couple put their son first in their decision to move

There were various reasons why Meghan and Harry made such a life-changing decision. The two had only been married for a year and a half, but things hadn’t been easy for Meghan since joining the family. She was portrayed negatively in the media, making it difficult for her to win over the public.

The couple also had their son, Archie, in mind when they left the family. Archie was born in May 2019, and Harry and Meghan opted not to give him a royal title. This was a clear sign that they were planning to leave the royal family, though most people didn’t realize it at the time.

Archie could be in more danger in Canada

Harry and Meghan’s intentions were good in moving Archie to North America. Harry never liked growing up in the spotlight, and he didn’t want his son to be subject to the same media scrutiny that he was as a child. But moving Archie to Canada might have proven to be dangerous for the little boy.

Self-defense expert Matt Fiddes said that the couple’s son might now be a target for kidnapping. Since Harry and Meghan don’t have the same umbrella of protection in Canada that they did in the U.K., they need to be even more protective of Archie. “The issue for them is more like a kidnap and ransom attempt,” Fiddes said of Archie’s safety. He was suggesting that kidnappers might use Archie to force Harry and Meghan to hand over millions of dollars.

Security for the couple will cost millions

Protecting Meghan, Harry, and Archie won’t come at a cheap cost. Now that they’re halfway around the world from the royal family and don’t have the same security blanket that they did, they might need to shell out even more money to make sure their family is as protected as possible.

The family’s security cost easily tops $1 million annually, but Fiddes suspects it’s actually somewhere between $13 and $19 million per year. Right now, it remains unclear who is paying the couple’s security costs, but it’s been suspected that it’s still being funded by the queen.
