Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘Unprepared’ for Media Attention, But Harry ‘Tried to Warn’ Markle
Could Meghan Markle have ever really been prepared for the media attention and public scrutiny she’d face when she married Prince Harry? While the negativity she faced when the couple was dating might have given her some idea, a new report suggests that, despite Harry warning her, the couple were “unprepared” for the constant criticisms.
Prince Harry and Markle admitted early on they were unprepared
Prince Harry and Markle live in a spotlight that’s hard to avoid and is often filled with critics ready to pounce on their every misstep. It turns out that early on the couple admitted they were “unprepared” for the level of attention they received.
Throwing things back to the 2017 interview they did when they got engaged, it’s clear that early in their relationship, they didn’t realize how much the media and public would be interested in their relationship.
The couple shared at the time that they didn’t know they would be “hit so hard” and when Markle was asked whether she was aware of what it meant to get involved with a member of the royal family, the now duchess remarked: “I think I can very safely say as naive as it sounds now, having gone through this learning curve in the past year and a half, I did not have any understanding of what it would be like.”
She added, “I don’t think either of us did.”
“I tried to warn you”
Prince Harry shared, “I had tried to warn you as much as possible,” but that warning wasn’t enough, as he noted, “But I think both of us were totally surprised by the reaction after the first five, six months.”
He added: “I think you can have as many conversations as you want, trying to prepare as much as possible but we were totally unprepared for what happened after that.”
Markle shared that many believed that her experience as an actress and someone used to being in the public eye would have prepared her for this, but she said that wasn’t the case. According to Markle, she lived a “relatively quiet life” and hadn’t been part of the “tabloid culture” before.
She noted, “I think we were just hit so hard at the beginning with a lot of the mistruths. I made the choice not to read anything positive or negative. It just didn’t make sense. Instead we focused a lot of our energy on focusing on our relationship on us.”
Prince Harry issued a statement when they were dating
Of course, Prince Harry famously issued a statement when their relationship went public, confirming that the couple was dating and taking aim at the media. The statement from his communications secretary noted that Prince Harry “has never been comfortable” with the “curiosity about his private life” but “has tried to develop a thick skin” about it.
The statement continued that there was “a line crossed,” noting: “His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public — the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”
The statement added that Prince Harry was “worried about Ms. Markle’s safety.”
Prince Harry and Markle take legal action
Most recently, Prince Harry and Markle announced they were taking legal action against a tabloid that printed a private letter the duchess wrote to her father. The powerful statement released by Harry fired back at the media for the way they’ve treated Markle, comparing it to the way his mother, Princess Diana, was harassed.
