Though Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle are patiently awaiting the arrival of their first child, Baby Sussex — the duo haven’t exactly stopped working. In fact –Kensington Palace just announced that Prince Harry would be teaming up with Oprah Winfrey for a documentary series about mental health. The British Royal and the legendary media mogul will both serve as co-creators and executive producers for the Apple TV series.

In a statement, Kensington Palace said of the series, “The multi-part documentary series will focus on both mental illness and mental wellness, inspiring viewers to have an honest conversation about the challenges each of us faces, and how to equip ourselves with the tools to thrive, rather than to simply survive.” Since mental health is such a personal subject, we wondered if Prince Harry and Oprah Winfrey are close friends.

Are Prince Harry and Oprah Winfrey close friends?

Though Prince Harry and Oprah Winfrey have met several times over the years –the OWN CEO’s relationship is actually with Meghan Markle. It looks like Winfrey extended her hand to Markle as a friend and mentor when the duchess began dating Prince Harry in 2016. In fact–before the royal wedding, Winfrey was photographed spending the afternoon with Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland. At the time, there were rumors that Ragland would be sitting down with Winfrey to talk about the racist abuse her daughter had been experiencing. However, no interview has surfaced.

Still, Oprah attended the duke and duchess’ royal wedding where she said, “I can’t wait to see the goodness that will come from their union. Goodness that I know for sure will help change the way the world thinks about what is possible, even more than it already has.” Oprah’s best friend, Gayle King, also attended Markle’s NYC baby shower –so they’ve obviously both gotten even close to the Sussexes.

Did Oprah Winfrey just defend Meghan Markle?

In addition to being a friend and mentor –Oprah has also been a staunch defender of Meghan Markle. In an interview with CBS This MorningOprah said,

I think she’s being portrayed unfairly, and I feel that if people really knew her, they would know that she is not only everything that we perceive her as being—graceful and dynamic and holding that position—but she just has a wonderful, warm, giving, loving heart. I see all the crazy press around her. I think it’s really unfair. She actually does not read anything, which I find . . . I think that’s remarkable—that in spite of all that’s going on, she does not read anything.
