The announcement accompanied a quote from the Duke of Sussex, noting: “I truly believe that good mental health — mental fitness — is the key to powerful leadership, productive communities and a purpose-driven self.”

The official details were revealed in the caption, which noted: “The pair have been developing the series for several months and are looking forward to sharing such an important project on this global platform.”

The announcement further revealed the details of the project: “The dynamic multi-part documentary series will focus on both mental illness and mental wellness, inspiring viewers to have an honest conversation about the challenges each of us faces, and how to equip ourselves with the tools to not simply survive, but to thrive.”

Additionally, the pair remarked that “It is a huge responsibility to get this right as we bring you the facts, the science and the awareness of a subject that is so relevant during these times.”

The announcement shared: “Our hope is that this series will be positive, enlightening and inclusive — sharing global stories of unparalleled human spirit fighting back from the darkest places, and the opportunity for us to understand ourselves and those around us better.”

The project builds on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s commitment to mental health issues

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been busy at work on various “issues and initiatives regarding mental health,” according to the announcement. Prince Harry personally has “candidly shared personal experience and advocated for those who silently suffer, empowering them to get the help and support they deserve.”

Additionally, “His Royal Highness has spent many years working with communities throughout the UK and young people across the Commonwealth to break the stigma surrounding mental illness and broaden the conversation of mental wellness to accelerate change for a more compassionate, connected and positive society.”

Oprah commented on the post: “Delighted to be partnering with you,” adding, “Hope we shed a lot of Light. And change some lives!” This is Prince Harry and Oprah’s first project together.

Oprah said they had ‘secret meetings’

During an interview with Gayle King on CBS This Morning, Oprah talked about the project with Prince Harry and how it all came together.

She explained that, in talking to him, she brought up the idea: “I said, ‘I’m going to be doing this thing with Apple, it’s a big concern of mine too, and I want to try to erase the stigma.’ He said, ‘if there’s anything I can do,’ and I said, ‘as a matter of fact…'”

Oprah further shared that she flew to London so they could have “secret meetings” to get the project off the ground. The series is definitely a labor of love, with Oprah explaining: “Our hope is it will have an impact on reducing the stigma and allowing people to know that they are not alone.”
