Prince Harry Refuses to Allow Meghan Markle to Become Like Princess Diana, Sues Tabloids Instead

Prince Harry has had enough of people bullying his wife, and now he’s doing something about it.

The Duke of Sussex made headlines Tuesday after delivering an impassioned speech about the topic, which is obviously very emotional for him. Rather than standing idly by and allowing the tabloids to eviscerate Meghan Markle, Prince Harry is standing up for her and threatening legal action if the treatment continues.

It’s all very reminiscent of what happened with Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana. Her life was ruined by overly aggressive reporters and photographers hounding her every move. The Duke of Sussex is more sensitive than most to this type of behavior because he saw firsthand how badly it could turn out. And he’s not letting it happen again.

Prince Harry says he won’t stand for ‘ruthless’ tabloid intrusion anymore

The statement comes after a long two years and an increasing public obsession with Meghan Markle. Much like Princess Diana, the Duchess of Sussex is young, beautiful, and glamorous — which is fueling the rumor mill even more. People have been comparing the international obsession with Markle to the fervor people felt for Princess Diana. But that popularity has taken a dark turn.

“Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences – a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son,” Prince Harry said in a statement this week.

He explained how hard things have been for the new mother, saying the Duchess of Sussex has, “continued to put on a brave face – as so many of you can relate to – I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been.”

At least one publication is facing legal repercussions

So what does it all mean for the tabloids, exactly? Nothing good. A legal spokesperson from Schillings confirmed that legal proceedings against one popular tabloid are already in the works. Though they aren’t the only offender, there’s a good chance the Duke of Sussex plans to make an example out of them.

“We have initiated legal proceedings against the Mail on Sunday, and its parent company Associated Newspapers, over the intrusive and unlawful publication of a private letter written by the Duchess of Sussex, which is part of a campaign by this media group to publish false and deliberately derogatory stories about her, as well as her husband,” the Schillings rep said.

“Given the refusal of Associated Newspapers to resolve this issue satisfactorily, we have issued proceedings to redress this breach of privacy, infringement of copyright and the aforementioned media agenda.”

Prince Harry is trying to protect Meghan Markle like his own father failed to do

Royal fans may remember Princess Diana begging Prince Charles to step up and stand up to the press on her behalf, especially towards the end of their marriage when tabloids became especially vicious. But the Prince of Wales just ignored her plight.

Prince Harry is clearly nothing like his father. The Duke of Sussex said he’s been, “a silent witness to her private suffering for too long. To stand back and do nothing would be contrary to everything we believe in.”

He also reiterated that Princess Diana was the inspiration behind the move. “Though this action may not be the safe one, it is the right one. Because my deepest fear is history repeating itself. I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditized to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces,” Prince Harry said.

“We thank you, the public, for your continued support. It is hugely appreciated. Although it may not seem like it, we really need it,” Prince Harry said.
