Prince Harry Once Said Meghan Markle ‘Will Be Unbelievably Good’ At Being a Royal — So What Happened?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were once full of hope. When the two first announced their engagement, it was clear from their interview that they were excited to start the next chapter together as royals. Somewhere down the line, though, things changed.

These days, Harry and Meghan are doing their best to go completely underground — a serious shift from their jovial attitude only two years prior. What happened to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex?

Harry and Meghan’s relationship moved quickly

When Harry and Meghan started dating back in 2016, things seemed blissful. The two were set up on a blind date, and they hit it off instantly. From that moment, they were in constant communication, and it wasn’t long before Harry knew Meghan was the woman he wanted to marry.

Harry proposed to the duchess after only about a year and a half, and they were married within six months. But the Harry and Meghan who spoke during the couple’s engagement interview are far different from the Harry and Meghan today.

The Sussexes were once upbeat and positive about joining the royal family

When the two first announced their engagement, they were so full of life. Harry was thrilled to be starting on this journey with Meghan, and he was confident that she would be able to handle royal life.

“… She will be unbelievably good at the job part of it as well as obviously a huge relief to me because she will be able to deal with everything else that comes with it,” Harry said during the couple’s engagement interview. The couple were excited to dive into making a change together — they were full of optimism about what their royal future held. But somewhere down the line, it all went wrong.

The family’s close bond started to disband — and Harry and Meghan were by themselves

There were rumors before the couple’s wedding that Prince William felt the two were rushing — and so began a long journey of battling rumors of a feud between another prominent royal couple: Prince William and Kate Middleton. In a 2019 interview, Harry said that he and his brother were on different pages, seemingly confirming the feud rumors.

The truth is, nobody knows the full story of what happened between the Sussexes and the Cambridges. There was speculation that Meghan and Kate had a few rocky moments, which turned into an all-out feud, and that William cautioned his brother about marrying Meghan. However, nothing has ever been proven. And the public still lives in the dark about where things went wrong, though it almost certainly played some kind of role in the Sussexes’ departure.

The press, the public, and the family all seemed at odds with the couple

The negative media attention was another problem that Harry and Meghan had trouble conquering. Though they were full of spunk and excitement while announcing their engagement, they quickly realized that neither the press nor the public supported Meghan. People often spoke badly about the duchess, and no matter how much good she did, she could never get one step ahead of the negative stories that followed her.

It seems that there is no clear reason why Harry and Meghan had such problems in their roles. It’s possible that another duchess marrying into the family led people to pick sides, with most of them choosing Kate — there have been plenty of negative comments about how Meghan compares (or doesn’t compare, rather) to the Duchess of Cambridge. Plus, with things going sour between Harry and William, Meghan and Harry had nobody they could definitely count on, despite still reportedly remaining close with Queen Elizabeth.

All of the negativity led to mounting stress that eventually overtook them. And it appears that the only way they felt they could escape it was by escaping the family altogether. More than two months after announcing their departure, the couple are still hounded by negative stories — and it makes us wonder if the press and the public will ever give the duchess a chance.
