Prince Harry shared the way fatherhood has changed him

WaterBear posted a clip from Prince Harry’s chat with their CEO Ellen Windemuth and Head of Strategy Sam Sutaria. They explained in the Instagram caption, “We had the opportunity to talk with Prince Harry about conservation, his work as the president of @africanparksnetwork and the importance of storytelling to help drive meaningful action.”

They added, “It’s a complete must see and available on WaterBear today. We can’t wait for you to watch, tune in and enjoy!”

During their discussion, Prince Harry expressed how becoming a parent opened his eyes in a new way. “Being in nature is the most healing part of life, I truly believe that’s one reason why it’s there,” he said.

He continued, “But the moment you become a father, everything really does change because then you start to realize, well, what is the point in bringing a new person into this world when they get to your age and it’s on fire?”

“We can’t steal their future, that’s not the job we’re here for,” he added. “I’ve always believed that hopefully we can leave the world in a better place than when we found it, so I think we really need to take a moment and think well, how do we get what we need and have our desire fulfilled without taking from our children and generations to come?”

“At the end of the day, nature is our life source … but you can’t uplift, educate and inspire unless there is a form of action that follows,” he noted.

Prince Harry addressed how the pandemic has been tough for everyone

At the beginning of the chat, Prince Harry addressed how difficult the year has been due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, calling it a “universally tough year for everybody.”

He continued, “Somebody said to me at the beginning of the pandemic, it’s almost as though Mother Nature has sent us to our rooms for bad behavior to really take a moment and think about what we’ve done.”

“It’s certainly reminded me about how interconnected we all are, not just as people but through nature,” he added. “We take so much from her but we rarely give anything back.”

Prince Harry shared the importance of taking action

During the chat, Prince Harry shared his perspective on the importance of taking action. “For me, it’s about putting the dos behind the says, and that is something which WaterBear is doing, is going to be doing.”

WaterBear is a streaming service that provides content and documentaries about environmental issues, climate concerns, and conservation — as well as a necessary call to action. “There are so many documentaries that are happening, I always imagine, whether it’s an individual, couples, families, sitting there watching this stuff and going, ‘OK you’ve now just made me more aware of a global issue, now I’m quite depressed, I’m gonna go and make myself a meal and probably forget about it,'” Prince Harry noted.

He continued, “Whereas with WaterBear now, to have all that content in one place, to be able to have that option at the end as a call to action, because people want to know, ‘How can I make a difference, how can I help,’ and I really am energized and full of optimism now to know we have the tools, we have the mindset to be able to make this change.”
