Prince Harry’s Previous Comments May Have Led to Donald Trump’s Resentment of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex
President Donald Trump has an ax to grind with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex recently moved to Los Angeles, raising concerns about how they will pay for security. Taking to Twitter, Trump revealed that the US will not pay to protect the Sussexes, and royal experts believe Harry’s previous comments about Trump’s administration is the source of his resentment.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle move to California
For the past few months, Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, have been living in a rental home on Vancouver Island. The couple has been clear about their plans to live in North America, but they refused to reveal where they would set up a second home — until now.
Before Canada and the US closed their borders, Harry and Meghan flew to Los Angeles and are reportedly going to buy a home in the area. Not only does this put them closer to Meghan’s mom, Doria Ragland, but it also gives them more opportunities to build their brand.
The move makes sense for the Sussexes, whose exit from the royal family became official on March 31. But it also raises questions about how they will fund their exorbitant security expenses in America.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are seeking to become financially independent from the crown, so the royals will not be footing the bill. If Trump gets his way, the Duke and Duchess will have to pay for security out of their own pocket.
Trump says the Sussexes must pay for security
Following Prince Harry and Meghan’s move to LA, Trump took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the couple’s security. Trump revealed that he is a big supporter of the crown and that Harry and Meghan will need to pay for their own protection if they want to stay in the US.
“I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen & the United Kingdom. It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada,” Trump explained. “Now they have left Canada for the U.S. however, the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!”
When it comes to providing security for senior members of the royal family, it does not come cheap. Security goes beyond protecting the royals on a daily basis. It also involves gathering intelligence behind-the-scenes and ensuring that threats are kept in check.
With that in mind, Prince Harry and Meghan’s security expenses will be substantial. And with the pair no longer relying on public funding, it could take a huge bite out of their budget.
While Harry and Meghan work out the logistics of paying for protection, royal experts believe they know exactly why Trump is not willing to pay for their security.
Trump may resent the Duke of Sussex
Trump’s recent comments mark a change in attitude towards the Sussexes. When Meghan hosted her baby shower in New York City a few years ago, Trump helped pay the bill for security.
According to Express, one reason Trump is not helping them out anymore is because of Harry’s recent conversation with a prank caller. Harry was fooled into believing he was talking to Greta Thunberg when he said that Trump has “blood on his hands.”
Angela Levin, an expert on the royals, believes that Prince Harry’s comments created resentment in Trump, who was the one who reached out with the offer to pay for Meghan’s baby shower security.
“I suspect he does not like the fact that Harry was caught out saying that he has blood on his hands when there was this leak on his phone, and he thought he was talking to Greta Thunberg and her father,” Levin shared. “I think if somebody calls you that, particularly if you have a nature like Mr Trump, you feel a bit resentful about offering to pay.”
Trump can also excuse himself from paying for Prince Harry and Meghan’s security since the pair are no longer active members of the royal family. The couple will no longer use their HRH royal titles, which opens the door for Trump to turn them away.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle open up about exit
Harry and Meghan responded to Trump’s recent tweet about their security plans and made it very clear they have no intention of asking the United States into covering their security detail. In fact, it is now known that Prince Charles and the Duchy of Cornwall will continue to pay for a large portion of the cost.
On March 30, the pair issued a statement thanking fans for their ongoing support. They also assured their followers that they will be “reconnecting” with everyone in the near future.
“Thank you to this community – for the support, the inspiration and the shared commitment to the good in the world. We look forward to reconnecting with you soon. You’ve been great!” they wrote.
Moving forward, Harry and Meghan will no longer use their brand, Sussex Royal. The couple will be launching an entirely new brand, though they have yet to reveal any details about the project.
The royal family will be re-examining Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s exit in 12 months.
