Meghan Markle and Prince Harry aren’t the only royal duo walking down the aisle soon. Queen Elizabeth II’s granddaughter, Princess Eugenie, announced her engagement to her longtime beau, Jack Brooksbank. The couple plans to tie the knot in the fall.
Since Markle and Prince Harry are getting married in May at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, the same venue that Princess Eugenie will also use, everything should theoretically go off without a hitch. Unfortunately, some very juicy royal drama might mean otherwise. Apparently, Princess Eugenie’s grandfather, Prince Philip, may not be too pleased about her wedding, and you’ll probably be shocked to know why.
A not-so-restful retirement
After over 60 years in the public eye, Prince Philip officially retired from the public eye in August 2017. After thousands of public appearances, the Duke of Edinburgh is ready for a nice long rest, but apparently, his grandchildren won’t let him be great.
Though Prince Philip is said to be thrilled for Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie respectively, we doubt he’s excited about having more public spectacles on his agenda.

A decades-long feud
Though we’re sure he’d rather be lounging around Buckingham Palace, Prince Philip’s apprehension surrounding Princess Eugenie’s wedding has way more to do with the guest list than his retirement. Rumor has it that Prince Philip absolutely loathes Princess Eugenie’s mother, Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, Duchess of York.
In fact, his hatred runs so deep that he cannot bear to even have her in his sight. We doubt family photos at this wedding will be stress-free.
Next: Their feud began because of these photos.
The tale of ’92
Obviously, Prince Philip doesn’t just abhor Fergie for no reason. In fact, his reasons for wanting her out of his sight might be kind of valid. It all stems back to 1992. Fergie married Prince Andrew, the queen and duke’s third child in 1986. But by 1991, their marriage was in shambles.
Divorce isn’t a huge thing for the royals anymore, but before the Duchess and Duke of York announced their separation, Fergie was photographed topless with oil tycoon, John Bryan. Bryan was also sucking Fergie’s toes in the pictures. Apparently, no one had the foresight to warn the royal family that the photos were going to be published, so the Windsors found out about them over breakfast while reading the morning newspapers.
Prince Andrew and the Duchess of York separated soon after that, and their divorce was finalized in 1996.

A forbidden reunion
Though Prince Andrew and Fergie have been divorced for over 20 years, they still live together at the Royal Lodge and are very much a couple. However, when there were talks of the couple officially walking down the aisle again in 2000, the queen and the Duke of Edinburgh explicitly forbade it.
Prince Philip even described Fergie as, “having no point.”

Cash for access
If the toe-sucking scandal wasn’t enough to boil the Duke of Edinburgh’s blood, Fergie’s more recent scandal surely made him wash his hands of her completely.
In 2010, the Duchess of York was caught by an undercover journalist who offered her $500,000 for access to the royal family. Fergie was caught on tape pocketing $40,000 in cash as a down payment. How appalling.
Next: A two-way hatred
A tyrannical duke
Hatred and ire apparently go both ways. The Duchess of York is apparently no fan of Prince Philip’s either.
A source told The Daily Beast, “She always likes to say how he rules the Royal family with a rod of iron. They loathe each other, to put it frankly.”
Next: A very interesting wedding day
Starting off on a bad note
If Fergie wants Princess Eugenie’s wedding to go off without a hitch, she’s already starting off on the wrong foot. As soon as the princess announced her engagement, her mom went on a social media bender, tweeting out a string of cringe-worthy tweets that included photos of her daughter and future son-in-law.
One tweet said, “They float with laughter and love .. although a boat helps! #engagement #eugieandjack @TheDukeOfYork @yorkiebea”
A planned BBC interview with the couple was quickly canned when the royals got wind that Fergie was going off the rails and Princess Eugenie’s father, Prince Andrew, had to step in to effectively muzzle his ex-wife.
Next: The other long-running royal feud you should know about.
The issue of royal status
Princess Beatrice, a daughter of Sarah Ferguson, has long had a problem with Kate Middleton’s rise in royal status, and in popularity. This is compounded by fear drudged up by the prospect of Prince Charles, Kate’s father-in-law, taking the throne after Queen Elizabeth. Under Charles’ rule, the royal family would become a more exclusive group including all the heirs — like Kate’s husband, Prince William. This would further push Princess Beatrice into Kate’s shadow.

Beatrice’s public disdain
Heck, Princess Beatrice doesn’t even hide the fact that she doesn’t like the Duchess of Cambridge! Take a look at any photo from a royal family gathering, and you will mostly see polite smiles and thoughtful chitchat — except from Beatrice, who is regularly photographed glaring right at Kate Middleton.

The rollerskating party
One incident that brought this royal feud to the surface was Kate’s roller disco charity event back in 2008. The event is mostly remembered for the photo of Kate lying flat on her back after tripping in her skates. But Kate also reportedly gave Princess Beatrice the cold shoulder all evening. This surely irked Beatrice, who was already feeling like she was in the soon-to-be-duchess’s shadow.
Next: Not everyone was invited to the royal wedding.
The wedding invitation
Beatrice certainly made a scene at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding in 2011 thanks to her octopus-like hat. But she was also upset over the fact that her boyfriend, Dave Clark, and her mother were not invited to the event. Fergie has expressed publicly that she was hurt by the snub. Of course, this gave Beatrice yet another reason to dislike Kate.
Next: Another invite wasn’t sent, along with godmother status.
Prince George’s christening
Prince William reportedly didn’t get along well with Beatrice’s former boyfriend Dave Clark. (Hence him not getting invited to the wedding.) William and Kate then didn’t invite Dave to Prince George’s christening, where it was thought that Beatrice may be chosen as the godmother. (Which she wasn’t.) Beatrice never quite let it go, and was a no-show at Princess Charlotte’s christening a couple years later.

Where Princess Eugenie fits in
You don’t hear as much about Princess Eugenie’s beef with Kate Middleton. But she is loyal to her sister, and isn’t a fan of the Duchess of Cambridge either. She too thinks that Kate acts like a diva, and is not a fan of having to be in her shadow.
