Prince Philip Was Furious At Prince Charles For This Disastrous Mistake He Made While Married to Princess Diana

We all know the story of how Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage turned out. What looked to be a fairytale on that July day in 1981 was anything but, and years later the end of their union played out like a soap opera.

While many remember Diana’s explosive Panorama interview there was something Charles did before the princess spoke on the record, and that infuriated his father, Prince Philip. Here’s what Charles did that “incensed” the Duke of Edinburgh and why he called it the biggest mistake of his son’s life.

The mistake Charles made that angered his father

The Prince and Princess of Wales endured a rocky marriage for years and decided to separate in 1992. Two years later, Charles spoke in a televised interview and admitted to the nation that he cheated on his wife.

“Did you try to be faithful and honorable to your wife when you took the vow of marriage?” broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby asked the prince.

“Yes,” Charles responded before adding, “until it became irretrievably broken down, us both having tried.”

His decision to go public with that admission is something that angered quite a few people, especially his father.

“The Duke of Edinburgh was incensed, the rest of the family flabbergasted, the queen’s advisers and courtiers stunned, the prince’s friends appalled,” royal author Penny Junor wrote in her book The Firm.

Junor continued, “Many regarded as the worst mistake of his life. At the time many people thought it might cost him the throne.”

Princess Diana’s revenge

Charles’ actions also set into motion Diana’s choice to go public with her side. She secretly invited cameras into Kensington Palace and spoke candidly about her troubled marriage and her husband’s infidelity. She also questioned if Charles was fit to be king one day.

Of course, the royals weren’t happy with what Diana did either and Queen Elizabeth II ultimately decided that enough was enough when she wrote letters advising them to get a divorce. They did and that was finalized in August 1996, one year before the princess’ tragic death.

Even though there was public mudslinging and fault on both sides, it’s been reported that Philip and Her Majesty put most of the blame for Charles and Diana’s marriage failing on their son.

In the documentary Princes Of The Palace, royal expert Robert Lacey said that “[The queen] and her husband, Prince Philip, put more of the blame on Prince Charles.”

Lacey added that the reason for that is because “Prince Charles of course, as we since discovered, was already committed emotionally to another woman.”

On April 9, 2005, Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles.
