While the British royal family makes their lives look easy — after all, how hard is it to smile and wave? — the fact is there is plenty going on behind the scenes that the public never gets to see. Most commoners are completely unaware of how stressful it is being the future monarch.
One of the less glamorous aspects of the job is the sheer amount of paperwork. It’s true that Prince William, Kate Middleton, and the rest of the royals employ plenty of assistants to help them stay organized. But even with help, being a working royal is still a complicated role to fill.
Recently, Prince William and Kate Middleton disappointed their fans in a certain way. But they were completely justified in doing so.
Prince William and Kate Middleton receive mountains of letters
It’s difficult to imagine the sheer number of letters that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge receive every single day. From good wishes for special occasions like birthdays or anniversaries to more personal letters, this couple has seen every type of correspondence.
Up until recently, Prince William and Kate Middleton had been responding to these letters very deliberately. But now they’ve admitted that their time is better spent elsewhere and won’t be able to answer every single letter.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge can only respond to major events
This news comes courtesy of a royal follower who sent a letter recently in advance of the King’s Cup Regatta in August. This fan mentioned the couple’s anniversary, and the response explained that Prince William and Kate Middleton’s royal office will only be replying to letters sent on milestone anniversaries such as 5, 10, 15, and 20 years.
The letter said: “With regard to your inquiry about their wedding anniversary, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge greatly appreciate all the messages that are sent in celebration of special events.
“However, with limited resources available to handle the growing volume of cards that they receive, Their Royal Highnesses will now focus on responding to a select number of these occasions such as Christmas, birthdays and significant anniversaries.”
Certain royal fans may still receive personalized replies
Though this news is disappointing to some royal fans who were hoping to receive a reply from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the royal fan who broke the news did receive a special surprise in their reply. As the letter said, “Nevertheless, as a token of their appreciation, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have asked me to enclose a photograph which they hope you will like, and it is sent with Their Royal Highnesses’s warmest thanks and best wishes.”
The enclosed snapshot shows Prince William and Kate Middleton in a casual pose. And even though many fans were disappointed they’ll no longer be guaranteed a reply with every letter, this type of response proves that the couple is still very appreciative of their supporters.
It’s not easy being a working royal — but these two are doing a great job projecting an image of graciousness with their loyal subjects!
