Just a short time ago, Instagram was a simple social media platform where users shared photos—mostly of their meals. Now, it’s blown up into a veritable business model and platform for issues, with super users earning up to $1 million per sponsored post.
The royal family doesn’t use Instagram to make money (can you even imagine Meghan Markle promoting weight loss shakes?). But they do meet fans where they’re at and use Instagram for sharing carefully worded and curated posts that help develop their image and draw attention to causes that are important to them.
If you were wondering who is more popular between the two couples, Instagram is a great place to find out. There are some surprising things to find out about Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle through their Instagram accounts.
Which royal family members have Instagram?
There are several British royal family Instagram accounts to follow. First up you can keep up with the royal family in general at @theroyalfamily, which has “photos and videos about the work & activities of The Queen & the Royal Family.” Next up follow @clarencehouse to see Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. Princess Eugenie, Prince Andrew, and Sarah, Duchess of York are also on the ‘gram.
But the real rivalry exists between two other accounts. Prince William and Kate Middleton have their own personal Instagram called @kensingtonroyal which has 9.3 million followers. Meanwhile, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle share photos at @sussexroyal and have 8.6 million followers.
Why do Prince William and Kate Middleton have more followers?
It would be easy to just assume that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are more popular than the Duke and Duchess of Sussex based on their number of Instagram followers. But it’s not as easy as comparing apples to apples.
The most obvious reason why Will and Kate have more followers is their account has been around much longer. Months ago, @kensingtonroyal was the official account for both brothers and their wives before Prince Harry and Meghan announced their intention of starting their own account. There are close to 2,000 posts of all four of these royals serving at various engagements.
Meanwhile, @sussexroyal just launched in early April 2019. They only have 38 posts so far, but have managed to rack up 8.6 million followers in just 3 months. They even broke the Guinness World record within 6 hours of creating their account by accumulating 1 million followers in 5 hours and 45 minutes.
Which royal couple is more popular?
Instagram is not the perfect way to determine popularity, but based on these stats alone all signs indicate that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are more popular—at least on social media. In just a few short months, they’ve accumulated millions of followers to their Instagram and are poised to surpass @kensingtonroyal eventually.
All of this is good news for fans because it just encourages both sides to step up their Instagram games and share even more personal photos and messages! We are here for that.
