Prince William and Kate Middleton Made This Huge Gamble in Handling Their Private Lives, Experts Say

Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge aren’t necessarily known for taking risks. They toe the line and follow the royal family rules and, for the most part, avoid the negative scrutiny and tabloid headlines that plagued Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Royal experts believe there is an area that the Cambridges have made a huge gamble in, however.

Prince William and Kate keep some things private

Being in such a public role, it’s difficult for Prince William and Kate to keep everything private, but they’ve managed to strike a balance that keeps their fans happy while allowing them some privacy.

In the 2017 documentary Kate: The Making of a Modern Queen, journalist Catherine Myer explained how the Cambridges have kept much of their lives out of the headlines but do give fans a peek behind the curtain from time to time.

“They are, I think, interestingly positioning themselves for the age that they are in the era in which they are in the public eye, which is, of course, a social media-saturated, Instagram selfie era, where they are in some way going very much against the tide on that, trying to reclaim something for themselves,” Myer explained.

She added, “Now, I think that is potentially quite a clever thing to do in the long run. In the short term, it is inciting the ire of the press, so they’re getting a more negative press as a result, because the press feel shut out and you see some quite silly and nasty reporting as a result.”

Myer pointed to how this perception could lead to criticism. “But there is also the danger that they just end up looking like they’re not doing very much, which is the big criticism,” she added.

They have found a way to share their family life

Royal fans have taken an interest in Prince William and Kate’s family and, rather than shutting their followers out completely, they have found a way to control the way they share photos of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Emily Nash, a royal reporter for Hello magazine, explained how Prince William and Kate give fans just enough to keep them satisfied. “I think [William] understands that there is a huge public interest in their lives and affection towards them as a result of that, and that the media is necessary, certainly when it comes to conveying messages,” she explained. “I think he totally understands that it is a vital tool for him.”

She continued, “Kensington Palace has warned against the use of paparazzi photographs of the children in particular. Although they are still being taken quite frequently, there aren’t any UK publications that will use them and I think that’s probably helped a great deal to reassure him.”

The couple control the release of photos of their children, as Kate photographs them and then reveal the images as they like. “Instead, we have William and Kate choosing when they want to issue photographs of the children,” Nash shared.

Privacy is important to Prince William

Prince William and Prince Harry both value privacy after their mother Princess Diana’s experience in the spotlight. It’s clear that with families of their own now, they want to maintain boundaries for the safety and security of their spouses and children.

Royal correspondent Katie Nicholl shared how the media’s interest in Diana and how she couldn’t escape the spotlight impacted Prince William.

“William guards the privacy of his family more highly than anything else in his life and it doesn’t take a psychologist to work out why,” Nash noted.

She continued, “You only need to look at William’s own background, his relationship with his mother, what happened to his mother, the untimely death… preceding that, the breakdown of the Waleses’ marriage, everything played out in the media, poured over in the press and he hated it.”

“And you can completely understand why all he wants is a quiet family life out of the spotlight,” Nicholl added.
