Prince William and Kate Middleton Step Out With Queen Elizabeth as Meghan and Harry Continue Their Break From Royal Life
Prince William and Kate Middleton were giving off some future King and Queen vibes at a reception with Queen Elizabeth this past Wednesday. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who will be taking over the monarchy after Prince Charles, looked absolutely radiant as they rubbed elbows with leaders from London’s Diplomatic Corps. The appearance proves that William and Kate are ready to take on more responsibilities, but it also comes as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle continue their break from royal life.
Prince William and Kate Middleton enjoy an evening with Queen Elizabeth
This week, Queen Elizabeth hosted a reception for the Diplomatic Corps at Buckingham Palace. Kensington Palace later shared photos of the event on social media, and William and Kate appeared like they had a blast hosting the guests with Her Majesty.
“The reception, hosted by Her Majesty The Queen, was attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps based in London — who support the work of @theroyalfamily in representing the UK at home and abroad,” Kensington Palace wrote alongside the pic.
Prince William looked very sharp in a black tuxedo and sash, while Kate dazzled in a dark V-neck dress, complete with her own sash and a stunning tiara. Also in attendance at the event were Charles and his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles.
While the Cambridges are obviously ready to take on more high-profile responsibilities, the same cannot be said of Harry and Meghan. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who had their first child, Archie Harrison, last May, are currently in America celebrating Christmas with her side of the family.
Harry and Meghan snub Queen Elizabeth
Harry and Meghan have experienced a lot of ups and downs this past year. The highlight of 2019 was clearly the birth of their son, but the couple is still struggling to adjust to life under the spotlight.
To make things even worse, Prince Harry’s relationship with Prince William is as strained as ever. In a recent documentary, titled Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Harry admitted that there is some bad blood between him and William.
“Stuff happens,” he shared. “But look, we’re brothers, we’ll always be brothers. We’re certainly on different paths at the moment but I’ll always be there for him and as I know he’ll always be there for me.”
An inside source recently told Us Magazine that the feud with Prince William and Kate Middleton pushed Harry and Meghan to skip Christmas with Queen Elizabeth at Sandringham this year. Instead, the couple took baby Archie to America and are spending the holidays with her mom, Dorian Ragland, in Los Angeles.
To be fair, Harry and Meghan have spent the past two Christmases with Queen Elizabeth and the royal family, so it was only a matter of time before they visited her family for the holidays.
Why didn’t Harry and Meghan appear at the reception?
The main reason why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle missed out on the reception is that they are already in California. The couple flew to America a few weeks ago and are expected to continue their break until 2020.
That said, the couple missed out on the reception last year as well. The two were busy working with one of Harry’s charities, the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund, and were unable to make the event.
The reception is something Queen Elizabeth hosts on an annual basis and is one of her most popular events of the year. Over 1,000 diplomats are invited to the party, as are most members of the royal family, plus top-level government officials and ambassadors.
It is unclear if Harry and Meghan thought about the reception when they made their holiday plans. It is believed that Meghan will use her time in America to help launch a branch of the Sussex Royal Foundation in the states, though nothing official has been confirmed on that front.
Prince William and Kate Middleton endure painful jokes
Although William and Kate are taking on more responsibilities, they recently made headlines after attending the Royal Variety Performance this week.
The hosts of the show, Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan, lobbed a few jokes at the royals during the event, which did not go over well with viewers. Prince William and Kate Middleton took the jabs well, though fans were convinced that they suffered throughout the entire ordeal.
“Thank you for coming out tonight. You’re on date night. That’s exciting. You got the babysitter until midnight or 1am? It’s worth that extra 20 quid,” Beckett joked.
Fans on social media were not impressed by the jokes. Plenty of royal watchers voiced their support for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on Twitter, and a few slammed the comedians for insulting the royal family.
“Poor Wills & Kate having to force laughter for these two idiots. #RoyalVarietyPerformance,” one fan wrote, while another added, “Wow @robbeckettcomic and @RomeshRanga hosting the royal variety is painful #RoyalVarietyPerformance.”
Prince William and Kate Middleton have not commented on the backlash over the Royal Variety Performance.
