Kate Middleton and Prince William’s relationship is about as perfect as it gets, but even their fairytale romance has hit some speed bumps along the way. Prior to their surprise breakup in 2007, William and Prince Harry reportedly left Kate in tears after canceling on her at the last second. The move was heartbreaking for Kate and her family and proved to be a sign of things to come.

Prince William and Prince Harry left Kate Middleton in tears

With eight years of marriage and three children under their belt, it is hard to imagine William and Kate ever having relationship issues. But back in the day, the two experienced some rough times in their romance that ultimately led to a breakup in 2007.

According to International Business Times, the drama started at the end of 2006 when Prince William promised Kate that he would celebrate Hogmanay with her and her family. For those that do not know, Hogmanay is a Scottish celebration for the end of the year.

But at the last minute, William canceled on Kate and choose to celebrate the end of the year with Harry and the rest of the royals. Members of the royal family gather at Sandringham every year for Christmas, and since Kate was not married to William, she was not allowed to attend.

Although Prince William did not think anything of the cancellation, author Katie Nicholl, who wrote the book, The Making of a Royal Romance, claims that Kate was very hurt by the move and cried over what happened.

“For William, it was no big deal, but for Kate, the cancellation was a sign of something more sinister to come,” Nicholl wrote.

William has second thoughts about marrying Kate

With his romance with Kate on the fritz, William reportedly reached out to Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth for advice on how to handle the situation. Nicholl claims that Charles and Queen Elizabeth told William to take things slowly and not rush into marriage.

“William had been having second thoughts and sat down with his father and his grandmother to have a frank discussion about his future with Kate. Both advised him not to hurry into anything,” Nicholl stated.

Later the following year, Prince William and Kate Middleton broke things off for a few months before getting back together. It would take William another three years after their reconciliation to pop the big question.

The couple got engaged in 2010 and tied the knot in 2011. They have since enjoyed a strong marriage that has resulted in three beautiful children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

During their wedding in 2011, Harry told the couple that their relationship served as an inspiration for his own love life, which is about as adorable as it gets.

Why did Prince William and Kate Middleton breakup?

In 2007, William was still enrolled in the Household Cavalry and was stationed away from London. William and Kate were three hours away from each other, which meant they only saw each other over the weekends.

To make things worse, the couple was suffering under intense media scrutiny, which only put more stress on their already strained relationship. Prince William also did not make it back every weekend to see Kate and was once caught partying it up with a mystery girl.

As the pressure mounted, things ultimately proved too much to handle and William and Kate decided to break things off.

Shortly after the split, Kate started hanging out with her friends and did not seem to miss being under the spotlight. And it did not take long for Prince William to realize that he made a big mistake.

Why did they get back together?

William and Kate officially ended things in April of 2007. Nicholl claims that before May ended, William was convinced that he did the wrong thing and contacted Kate to make amends.

“At the end of the month, they secretly met up at Clarence House and at a pub close to Highgrove, where William told her he wanted to get back together,” Nicholl explained.

Nicholl added that Kate was not ready to rush back into the relationship and wanted some time before taking Prince William back.

Fast forward the next month and William formally invited Kate to a costume party he was putting on at his barracks. Kate accepted the invitation and showed up dressed like a seductive nurse.

At the party, William reportedly followed Kate wherever she went and begged her to come back. Kate ultimately said yes and the two have been together ever since.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have not commented on all the rumors surrounding the early days of their romance.
