Prince William Is Still the Most Popular Royal in the UK Amid Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Drama

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made headlines around the world when they announced their exit from the monarchy last week, but they still are not the most popular members of the royal family. A new poll suggests that Prince William is still the most popular royal in the U.K., despite all of Harry and Meghan’s recent drama. Here’s a quick rundown on which royals are the most and least popular with the public.

Prince William remains the most popular royal

The royal family has experienced a lot of upheaval in recent months. Harry and Meghan have been fighting an ongoing war against British tabloids and opened up about their struggles in a shocking documentary a few months ago.

The royal family was then rocked by Prince Andrew’s sex scandal, which ultimately led to his resignation this past fall.

But the biggest drama to hit the royal family came last week when Harry and Meghan announced that they are stepping down as senior members of the royal family. They also declared that they want to become financially independent and are looking to move to North America for part of the year.

Despite all of this headline-making drama, a new poll with Delta showed that Prince William is still the most popular member of the royal family. According to Express, the poll was broken down into age groups, with Prince William winning the majority across the board.

Inside the latest poll

The age groups in the poll include Millennials (20s and 30s), Generation X (40s and 50s), and Baby Boomers (60s and over). While William took the top spot among all groups, Meghan performed the worst in all categories.

Prince Charles, meanwhile, did not perform well with Millennials and was only two percentage points ahead of Meghan.

Fortunately, most people agreed that the monarchy should remain in place, though there is a shift on that front with the younger generation. In fact, 20 percent of Millennials felt like the monarchy should be done away with entirely.

It should be noted that only five members of the royal family were featured in the poll: Prince Charles, Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle. Queen Elizabeth, who remains one of the most popular royals ever, was not included in the poll.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announce their royal exit

After months of fighting negative press, Harry and Meghan had enough of the drama and announced their exit from the royal spotlight last week.

The couple made the stunning announcement via social media. They reportedly did not inform other members of the royal family ahead of time, catching everyone else by surprise.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” the couple shared. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

Shortly after the announcement, Queen Elizabeth summoned Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry to her Sandringham estate for a special media. She later issued a statement in support of Harry and Meghan’s decision.

It remains to be seen if Harry and Meghan will ever return to their posts as senior members of the royal family. Before they stepped down, however, it was reportedly Charles’ dream to keep them in the inner circle.

Inside Prince Charles’ plan for Prince Harry

Before Harry and Meghan tied the knot, Charles allegedly hoped that Harry would support his older brother throughout his time on the throne. Charles has reportedly wanted to slim down the monarchy to key individuals, but Harry was always supposed to be in that group.

Everything changed, of course, after Harry met Meghan. And when the pair welcomed their first child last spring, Harry’s wife and son took priority over the rest of the royal family.

With Harry and Meghan stepping down, Charles’ dream of Prince William having his brother at his side will likely not come to pass. Things could change in the coming years, but it sounds like Harry and Meghan are content with making their way out of the spotlight.

Meghan recently flew back to Canada while Harry appeared for his first public outing since the announcement this week. He is expected to reunite with Meghan in Canada in the coming days.

Prince William has not commented publicly on Harry and Meghan’s royal exit.
