Prince William and Kate Middleton ‘Breaking Traditional Protocol’ Is ‘Refreshing,’ Claims Royal Expert

Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge are not your typical royal parents. The future king and queen consort have three children — Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3.

But during their 10-year marriage, they’ve broken away from “traditional royal protocol” on numerous occasions. According to one expert, this new approach to royal parenting is “refreshing.”

Some think Prince William and Kate Middleton are making the royal family ‘more relatable’

In early May, William and Kate did something that no other royal has done before: They launched a YouTube channel. The couple also rebranded their Instagram and Twitter pages from “Kensington Palace” to “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge” and added a candid profile photo.

According to Royally Us podcast hosts Christina Garibaldi and Molly Mulshine, this new social media presence is a “cool approach” for the monarchy’s younger members. And they love seeing a different side of the royal couple.

“I am definitely looking forward to those light-hearted playful moments,” Garibaldi said. “Of course recently we saw that video that they released with their family. So it seems like they’re a little bit more relatable in a certain sense, which I love, and I think that’s what the monarchy needs. The royal family needs us to be able to relate to them a little bit more, so I think this is great.”

The first YouTube video they posted involves William turning to Kate and saying: “By the way you need to be careful what you say now because these guys are filming everything.”

Mulshine’s reaction to the clip was that it was “really cool” and it appears the channel won’t just feature “typical boring, PR-approved royal videos.” “It looks like it’s going to be fun videos where they’re joking around,” Mulshine said. “There are two moments in that first 25-second intro video where William and Kate are giggling together, and we never see that.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton are ‘breaking traditional protocol,’ royal expert says

Through social media, royal fans are seeing William and Kate as active and engaged parents who love to spend time with their kids.

“It’s really nice and refreshing to see the royals interacting with their children by learning through exploring and play, something that’s so important for children’s development and yet can be forgotten about by busy parents,” royal expert Daniel Glastonbury told Express. “The future king to breaking traditional protocol sets a wonderful example to parents across the country.”

When William and Kate celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary in April 2021, they shared a heartwarming video of their family enjoying a fun day at the beach, as well as roasting marshmallows together. This inside look at the family was “definitely unusual,” psychologist Dannielle Haig told Express.

“The overt affection that Wills and Kate show towards their children is most definitely unusual for the British Royal Family. But my, how wonderful it is to see,” Haig said.

Haig continued: “With the amount of influence that the royal couple have, our future King and Queen are setting a great example to other parents to unapologetically enjoy their time with their children.”

The royal family has a history of tradition and formalities

During the seven-decade reign of Queen Elizabeth, the monarchy has remained at arm’s length from the British public in many ways. Communication is always very formal via televised speeches, palace announcements, and engagements.

Those formalities have remained when it comes to royal parents and their children in public. Their behavior is prim and proper, and public displays of affection are not common.

But this started to change a bit with the late Princess Diana. She wasn’t afraid to show her love for her sons when in public. And her oldest son and his wife now have their own modern approach to parenting.
