Prince William Once Told Prince Charles He Hated Him, Book Reveals

Prince William and Prince Charles have known their respective paths since they were small boys. Both men will one day become king, and that can feel overwhelming to contend with for any person. Their respective roles in the British royal family have also made their father/son relationship very complicated.

Though they appear to get along well, Prince William was front and center as his parents’ marriage crumbled. He felt a lot of disdain toward Prince Charles when his affair with Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, came to light.

In fact, one royal author says that Prince William once told Prince Charles he hated him.

Prince William used to have a bit of a temper

While the Duke of Cambridge seems very calm, level-headed, and mild-manner, especially when he’s juxtaposed against his younger brother, Prince Harry, the prince’s public persona might not entirely match his private one.

In his new book, Battle of Brothers: William, Harry, and the Inside Story of a Family in Tumult, royal historian Robert Lacey reveal that Prince William and Prince Charles often got into vicious fights in front of Camilla that left the duchess stunned.

“In the years after her 2005 marriage to Prince Charles, Camilla has recounted to her own family and close friends her surprise at discovering this unexpected side to Prince Charming – ‘the boy’s got a temper!’” Lacey writes via Express. “Charles’s wife had been horrified at the ranting and raving that on occasion, William had unleashed against her husband in her presence.”

Prince William and Prince Charles’ relationship is very complex

In addition to some of the animosity that Prince Charles had against his father for his treatment of Princess Diana, Charles is also technically his eldest son’s boss.

Their royal relationship reportedly caused a ton of tension between Prince William and Prince Harry. In their book, Finding Freedom, Carolyn Durand, and Omid Scobie write via Entertainment Tonight,

Where you are born in this family dictates your position of power, and because of that, Harry has always come second to his brother, especially when it comes to funding. There were times in the past when Harry wanted to take on bigger projects and do more work, but he couldn’t get the money to support it. William was always the priority. A lot of their quarrels have been over budgets.

In Battle of Brothers, Lacey reveals that Prince William felt “open disdain and aggression toward his father that has lasted to the present day.” In one of the younger prince’s angry rants, he once told his father that he hated him.

“I hate you, Papa. I hate you so much,” William allegedly once shouted at his father, according to Lacey via Us Weekly.  Thankfully, things are apparently much better between the father and son, especially after Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, decided to resign from their roles. In fact, it seems that they are carving out a new path for the royal family as we step into a brand new royal era.
