Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, have stepped up as the British royal family’s main faces amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and following Megxit. The future king, his wife, and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, are looking to usher in a new royal era.
They want to be seen as down-to-earth and relatable, while still adhering to many of the traditions and customs of royal life. While Kate and William appear to be the picture of royal bliss now, their relationship has had its ups and downs. As college sweethearts, they’ve weathered more than one storm. In fact, in 2019, they held strong against unfounded rumors that the prince was having an affair with the duchess’ friend, Rose Hanbury.
Though the prince is said to have a wandering eye, he had quite the response when a famous actor openly flirted with Kate.
Prince William and Kate Middleton broke up twice before they got married
The Cambridges met during their first year at St. Andrews University. Though they started as friends, things quickly turned romantic. However, like any young couple, especially one who has to play out their love story in public, there were some bumps in their romance.
The duo split briefly in 2003 during college. The prince had grown very close to American heiress Anna Salon. “When Anna invited William and a group of friends to Texas for a holiday before he went to Greece, it hurt Kate deeply,” royal expert Katie Nicholl wrote in her book, William and Harry. “She suspected William might have feelings for the 22-year-old heiress.” Kate was uncertain about the couple’s future after college, so they split.
The pair got back together shortly after, only to split again in 2007. By then, their relationship was public, and there were huge marriage pressures. However, William was not ready to settle down. Kate ended the relationship in April 2007 when Prince William was photographed at Elements nightclub in Bournemouth, touching a half-naked girl inappropriately.
Their split only lasts a couple of months, and by Nov. 2010, they were engaged.
Kate Middleton has accepted Prince William’s wandering eye
It appears that in their younger years, Kate accepted the fact that her husband had a wandering eye, “He has always had a roving eye…that’s something Kate had always known and accepted – it was part of the deal if you like,” a friend of the prince told royal commentator Victoria Arbiter in the documentary, William & Kate: Too Good to Be True.
Thankfully, aside from those rumors in 2019, the future king has not been caught up in unsavory headlines. In fact, he had quite the response when a famous actor flirted with Kate.
This is how Prince William responded when a famous actor flirted with Kate Middleton
Actor Jack Whitehall was six years behind Kate at their high school, Marlborough College. Though they never spoke, when Whitehall hosted the Royal Variety Performance, he openly flirted with the duchess while he was on stage. This led to an encounter with William later.
“I flirted a little because I said she was one of my first crushes at school,” Whitehall said on The Jonathan Ross Show via Express. “And then in the line-up William came over and he was very funny. Because he was very nice, but very passive-aggressive, ‘Oh so you were flirting with my missus? Oh no, no, that was very, very funny,’That’s him going, ‘I could have you beheaded.’”
It seems like the flirting was all in good fun.
