Prince William: The Shocking Thing He Said About His Mental Health Charity

Current prince, future king, gossip press poster boy, President of the English Football Association — Prince William wears a lot of hats. Besides all of his official royal duties, of which there are many, he is very passionate about mental health. So much so that he has a charity, Heads Together, devoted to ending the stigmas surrounding mental health problems. It’s a noble endeavor, and you’ll never believe the shocking thing Prince William said about his charity.

There are many disorders under the mental health umbrella, and many of them are misunderstood. Even worse, people who are dealing with those disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and anxiety feel they can’t talk openly about their problems without being judged for them.

That’s where Heads Together comes in. The charity launched in 2016 with two primary goals. First, to end the stigmas about mental health issues. Second, to raise funds for programs that help treat mental health disorders.

Prince William and Kate Middleton and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are hands-on ambassadors for the charity.

Why Prince William is passionate about mental health

Prince William’s name and presence carries a lot of weight, so why did he chose mental health as one of his passion projects? Because he has first-hand experience of its devastating effects.

After graduation from Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2006, one of his first jobs was serving as a helicopter pilot in the East Anglian Air Ambulance. People speculated he wasn’t cut out for the job when he left the post after two years, but the truth is more disturbing. It turns out, piloting a rescue helicopter affected his mental well-being.

While speaking at an event for the launch of the Mental Health at Work Project in Bristol, England in September 2018, William revealed that the negative environment of working as an air ambulance pilot took its toll on him.

“I took a lot home without realizing it,” he said. “You see (so) many sad things every day that you think life is like that.

“You’re always dealing with despair and sadness and injury. The attrition builds up and you never really have the opportunity to offload anything if you’re not careful.”

The shocking thing Prince William said about Heads Together

As we mentioned a minute ago, Prince William is one of the most famous people on the Earth, and his name carries a lot of weight, but not enough for some.

During an interview at the Davos World Economic Forum in 2019, Prince William revealed that every celebrity he asked to support Heads Together declined. He approached “a lot” of famous people to help the cause, but no one took him up on it, according to the BBC. He also believes the stoic demeanor of the wartime generation contributes to Britons’ reluctance to discuss mental health.

Who did he ask to support Heads Together?

As a proper British gentleman, Prince William didn’t specify whom he asked to support Heads Together. However, we’re all but certain that Colin Firth, Daniel Radcliffe, Danny Boyle, and other celebrities who can’t stand the royal family didn’t receive a call.

It’s possible some of the world’s most famous people said no to Prince William when he asked about Heads Together. Richard Branson, Elton John, David and Victoria Beckham, Tom Cruise, and James Blunt are just a few of the popular celebrities that are friends with the royal family.
