The royal family has always been a source of fascination. Followers across the world crave to hear details about the family and love to hear juicy gossip. So, it comes as no surprise that there has been such an obsession over Prince William’s alleged affair. Even though the rumors started nearly four months ago, they still haven’t completely died down.
Add on to everything, William’s history with his parents’ affair, and the news has all the makings of a Lifetime movie — or at least a season of The Crown. But while the public wants to know whether the rumors are true and all the dirty details, chances are, we’ll never know what really happened.
Prince William’s rumored affair
Interestingly enough, there isn’t really any evidence pointing to an affair. The “facts” are circumstantial, speculation, and just plain made up. But still, many people believe that there is a possibility of truth behind the rumors, given Prince Charles’s past.
According to reports, William has been having an affair with a woman named Rose Hanbury. Hanbury and her husband have been close friends of William and his wife, Kate Middleton, and live just a short distance from them. They share many mutual friends and interact frequently.
The basis of the rumor is an alleged fallout between Kate and Rose. Apparently, the two had a major fight and Kate refuses to have anything to do with her. This fight is the only thing that caused tabloids to speculate that William was having an affair.
The British royal family is still recovering from the past
It’s hard to forget the scandal that surrounded the palace over 20 years ago. In 1992, Charles and Princess Diana announced that they were getting a divorce. In 1993, it was revealed why.
Charles had been carrying on an affair with his now-wife, Camilla Parker Bowles. The two had met in the early 70s and had continued to see each other even after they both married other people.
The public was unaware of the affair at the time that Charles and Diana divorced. But the next year, revealing tapes were leaked sharing graphic details about their relationship. The whole ordeal sent shockwaves through the family and created endless tabloid fodder.
The effects of the scandal were long-lasting, and it could even be argued that they are still being felt to this day. The affair was an embarrassment to the palace and a black mark on the couple. Even though Charles and Camilla married in 2005, many people still have a hard time accepting her.
Is silence the best response?
Nobody wants a repeat of what happened when Charles’s affair was revealed. The royal family is well aware that talking about the scandal will only continue to keep it in the news. As such, they have not made any comments about the alleged affair. Though the reports initially began in March of this year, they are slowly starting to fade in the headlines.
The family is likely hoping for bigger stories to overwhelm what has only proven to be rumors. The birth of Baby Archie and Prince Harry’s appearances have definitely distracted from the affair story.
The more that we see the family smiling, as we did at the Trooping of the Colour and in their candid garden photos, the more the public will see them as a happy family and forget about the affair. At least, this is what the family is counting on. Until there is proof that something has actually happened, we will likely never know truly if anything happened.
