Prince William’s Warning to Prince Harry About Meghan Markle Is Revealed in New Biography
At this point, we’ve all heard about the royal feud and whisperings that it began when Prince William allegedly warned Prince Harry about his relationship with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. But exactly what he said has long been a mystery.
However, a new biography on the Sussexes dives into their life behind palace doors and offers a detailed account of the rumored conversation the brothers had about the former Suits star.
A quick timeline of Prince Harry’s relationship with Meghan Markle
Prince Harry met Meghan in July 2016 when they were set up by a mutual friend, according to Town & Country.
“We met for a drink,” Meghan said in a later interview with The BBC. “And then I think very quickly into that we said, ‘Well what are we doing tomorrow? We should meet again.'”
Their relationship moved at lightning-quick speed from there. The pair had a second date and then decided to vacation to Botswana, Africa for their third, where they fell in love, according to People. After the press caught on to their relationship, Prince Harry confirmed his romance with Meghan in November 2016 while encouraging the press and members of the public to be a little nicer to her.
By the following November, the couple had gotten engaged. Prince Harry told the BBC that he proposed to Meghan over dinner with a ring featuring a diamond from Botswana and two stones that belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana.
Prince William is said to have warned Prince Harry about his relationship that same year
Multiple outlets have reported that Prince William allegedly confronted his brother sometime in 2017. In excerpts of the upcoming biography Finding Freedom by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, the authors write that the duke wanted to make sure Prince Harry knew what he was getting himself in to.
“Back when Meghan and Harry were dating, William, having met Meghan only a handful of times, wanted to make sure the American actress had the right intentions,” the book says. “After all, these are two brothers that have spent their whole lives with people trying to take advantage of them,” a source added.
Because of that, Prince William allegedly thought to have a one-on-one with his brother. “As William didn’t know a whole lot about Meghan, he wanted to make sure Harry wasn’t blindsided by lust.”
Plus, “Some members of staff were whispering words of alarm into the Duke of Cambridge’s ear,” according to the book. So Prince William allegedly told his brother: “Don’t feel you need to rush this. Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.” But calling Meghan “this girl” reportedly came off as condescending to him and led to major tension between them.
“In the months after William talked to Harry about the relationship, the two hardly spoke,” the book alleges.
The tension between them only worsened as the relationship progressed and eventually fueled Prince Harry and Meghan’s move to Frogmore Cottage, according to the book. But that only led to more negative publicity. Amid mounting feud rumors and endless criticism from the media, the couple announced in January that they were going to scale back from their roles as senior members of the royal family and spend time abroad.
Life for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle now
After wrapping their royal duties in March, the Sussexes spent a few weeks in Canada before settling in Markle’s native Los Angeles later that month. They’ve participated in some volunteer work and speaking engagements in the months since stepping down, but for the most part, it appears that they have been spending most of their time indoors due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Although things have been tense between Prince Harry and Prince William over the years, royal expert Katie Nicholl recently told Entertainment Tonight that they are talking more and have reached better ground.
“There have been clearly some quite major rifts in that relationship, but things have got better and I know that William and Harry are in touch on the phone,” she explained. “They have done video calls together, they have done a lot of family birthdays and I think with Prince Charles not being well, that really forced the brothers to pick up the phone and get back in touch,” Nicholl continued, possibly referencing Prince Charles’ battle with coronavirus.
As of writing, none of them have directly commented on the book, which hits shelves on Aug. 11.
